SURGERY GONE WRONG!!!!!

As is recommended I took Pietro in to the vet this morning to get fixed…. I had anxiety all day!! When I left him there he loked so small and helpless and scared, and I was right to have worried so!

The doctor called me around 2 today to tell me some bad news, he wouldnt say much only that Pietro hurt his back sometime after surgery and that I needed to come in. So I left work in tears.

Turns out he broke his back!! We brought him home to watch for the night and am taking him back in tomorrow to see if there is any change. As of now he has SOME movement in his rear right foot and none in the left. The doctor insisnts it was nothing they did and nothing more they could have done.**

Has anyone else had this happen and lived to tell about it? We know the chances of him pulling any sort of recovery are slim, but Im going to hang on to some hope since he seems to have a little feeling.

Any ideas on how I can get him to calm down and lay still? We’ve tried locking him in his cage, but he just tries to drag his limp legs around his 2 feet of cage. Hes not much better holding him but at least we can limit his movement.

 

 ** the doctor says when he went into surgery he seemed fine, when he came out of surgery they gave him some pain meds as he started waking up but they held him the entiretime so he wouldnt hurt himself as he was waking up. Everything was good and the put him in the kennel. the doc was going to call but had another patient to attend to , went back to check on him before he called and noticed something was wrong so they took xrays and saw he fractured his back.

Oh no – I’m so sorry. Did the vet indicate when this happened – did someone accidentally drop him after the surgery? I would want a little more information as to when and how this could have happened.

omg, I’m so sorry, that is just terrible. Poor baby. They certainly owe you a further explanation. If you left him whole and sound and then he suffers a broken back? How in the world do they think that it didn’t happen there????? I wish they could have given him some pain meds to at least let him rest a bit.

Oh my gosh, this makes me mad and sad at the same time.  Poor Pietro.  Something is real fishy there.  *Somebody* there has to know what happened.  I am sure the vet doesn’t want to get in any sort of trouble so they are playing dumb.

It is possible. We dont know if the spinal cord has been injured, but its not looking good I dont think. If it hasnt been injured and he can still potty then there is a chance of it healing… but its not easy.

I am really surprised that this vet clinic is not bending over backwards to do anything to make this right- if it is even possible!  It is clear the rabbit must have broken it’s back while in their care- otherwise the necessary pre-surgical exam before giving anesthesia and determining the rabbit fit for anesthesia would have revealed that abnormality.

That is an awful thing to have happen- and I do have some advice for you to consider.  You can take the rabbit back to the vet tomorrow to see what they say.   Did they give any steroid or anti-inflammatory injections to help with spinal cord/injury swelling?  I would ask them to refer you AND PAY FOR A VETERINARY NEUROLOGIST- this would be at a specialty clinic or at veterinary college- and might involve some travel on your part. 

I know it is hard, but instead of making them defensive just show how heartbroken and concerned that you are.  Make sure to keep you receipt as it may have procedures done listed on it- meds given, etc.  Ask for a copy of your rabbits medical records- the neurologist or specialist will need to see the records and x-rays.  If they refuse to pay for a neurologist then say you are taking your rabbit to another vet for a second opinion- and you need the records and x-rays.  Legally- the vet clinic owns the x-rays as they are a permanent part of your bunnies medical records- but x-rays can be photographed by hi-resolution camera’s and downloaded onto a computer- if the x-rays are already not digital.  Even if they do not have a camera or digital x-ray- they should be able to “sign” the x-rays out to you with the promise you will return them.  If they claim medical records are not entered yet offer politely to wait or have the vet hand write something as you need them to take him to another vet.

I know this is horrible to think about- but if your rabbit dies or has to be euthanized- if you want to follow up any action against the vet clinic you will need to pay for a complete necropsy- and that is why a second opinion vet is important if the surgery vet proves to be unhelpful and claiming no responsibility.

Here is a link for Florida vets….you can look up their vet license and see if they have any outstanding complaints or actions against them by the State of Florida who issues their license.  And on the left hand side of this page there is a link to file a complaint.  Filing a complaint will not help in time to get other assistance for your rabbit most likely (money wise and care ise) and a lot of times the investigations take awhile, but if you have proof from another vet- either second opinion or specialist (or worst case scenario- necropsy) then you will have something for the investigators to follow up on.  A lot of people tend to give up on filling out the paperwork and following up on filing complaints- but those determined enough to do so can get judgements against the vets license that is available for the public to see (by looking at the following link).

Now with that being said- maybe, although I know no reason why there was a another reason your rabbit broke its back- like a genetic bone disorder or something.  I have no experience with stuff like that but I do have a friend that is a vet and her own cat broke it’s hip- and on x-ray it showed the other hip was weak also.  The cat (a Siamese mix) had a genetic condition for poor hip formation. I had never heard or seen that before or after- so it is possible that the vet was not at fault.  But I think they were negligent and your bunny was hurt while in their care.

Yes thank goodness for Katnip-she knows her stuff. She’s right-it happened in there care-so really they should be bending over backwards…I’ve got nothing to offer other then recommending printing her response and making sure you got all that good info.

Also, feel free to get a second opinion-If you find a vet you like-I’d show up tomorrow morning on their doorstep-I’m sure they won’t turn you away.

Hang in there both of you.   You know having back problems myself   I put cold packs on my back when it is really acting  up.  I wonder if you could put some cold on his back for about 10 minutes every hour or so and help him with the swelling and pain.   

I would like to say he will get well once the swelling goes down from putting cold on his back  but I know I can’t.   I can    hope and pray he gets well.

Oh, this is just heartbreaking!!! I am so so so sorry that this has happened. I am speechless with how the vet is going about it, and I am shocked at how they are handling it.

Thank you Katnip for the all the advice! I am just dumbfounded by it. I have seen just a few times females sometimes losing their hind leg ability at first, but usually it would return within 24 hours, unless something happened. But a fractured back…that is just terrible…something went wrong, unless there is something geneticallThis has happen but a fractured back – something went wrong (unless like Katnip said there is some bone/spine abnormality) But even then for this to happen in their care – they should be bending over backwards to figure it out and to help in any way that is needed.

TY all! I was in such a state of shock yesterday I didnt know what to say or do or think or ask. The doctor who attended him yesterday is not intoday and we will be seeing another so we will see what he has to say or what i can get out of him. Simce it was not a 24hr hospital and he needs constant attention at this point we all agrred it was best if he spent the night in the comforts of his own home. this morning he has only peed a little and has done a lot of teeth grinding, but I was able to get him to drink some water and eat a small amount of hay… a decline in how we did last night. I did check to see if there were any complaints against this hospital and therer are not. The next closest one (and there arent many) does not take rabbits at all. Its been a long night….

Hopefully the other vet will be more honest with you. I am near tears as well. Just shocked. At a minimum you should be given a lot of pain killers to be administering to him. He should not be grinding his teeth without injections of meds by mouth or by syringe. Ask for them to give you what he needs and show you how to administer it.

It does sound actionable and that’s a scared vet who’s covering his… I am so sorry you are going through this.

He was given steroids today for swelling and to hopefully make him more comfortable. We go back again monday. He’s pooping and peeing, which is a good sign. Its going to be at least a week before we know how this will turn out in the long run.

I know how frightened you must be right now. Your bunny needs your love and concern but he also needs a calm mom who will get him through this. I foster for HRS and have seen rabbits recover almost completely from broken backs. If there are any residual physical issues, you will be amazed at how resilient rabbits can be given proper support. This group can help you if it becomes a permanent issue. Cage rest is important! Any spinal cord damage must have time to repair itself. Lori’s message included great professional advice.

 

Please don’t beat yourself up. Rabbits have extremely fragile back bones and they are easily broken. We believe God made them that way so they would not suffer too long if a predator should snatch them. Sounds terrible but we have to remember where rabbits fit in nature’s food chain. We have know rabbits to break their back by just jumping over or off a high place on their own. Do not jump to the conclusion that your bunny was mishandled. Let me relate a true experience. A friend’s rabbit broke her back during surgery at our vet a few years back. Of course we immediately blame them for mishandling. As I talked to various staff members, all of whom I knew well, the story emerged. The vet tech handling the rabbit was a very experience, gentle man who handled my bunnies all the time. I loved him because despite his relatively gruff exterior you could see how much he cared for the tiny creatures he was handling. He was holding the rabbit after surgery properly restrained in! a towel as they always did. The rabbit seemed to be resting peacefully in his arms. All of a sudden the rabbit gave a quick jerk like it had some type of spasm. He never came out of the tech’s arms and remained wrapped securely in the towel. It seems  that one involuntary jerk was enough to break the bunny’s back. This vet tech has never forgotten that experience and to this day lives with the horrible feeling that maybe he could have done more.

 

For your bunny’s good, please try to keep communication open with your vet. Continue to discuss the situation with him and his staff. Calm questions will get you farther than accusations. I am not saying that no one made an error. I am just pointing out that legitimate accidents can happen. I hope your bunny recovers and gets back to normal. The healing period will be harder on you than on him. Six to eight weeks of restricted activity can seem an eternity if he begins to feel better and wants to be more active. You will feel “mean” for restricting him but quiet during the healing process is important.  Please consider joining the disabled rabbits group for support to get your through his recovery period.

Just a couple of comments to consider on this.  First of all, if the rabbit wasn’t given anything else sedative-wise (like ketamine as a pre-op —that will relax the muscles as well), then waking up from isofluorane can happen more suddenly (‘fits and starts’).  Most of the narcotic pain meds will also do that—–IF given IM and NOT IV.  IV is quick to dissipate, and IM is slower and long-acting.

 

And in regards to steriods being used after something like this—-prednisone for a short duration would be the best bet———–HOWEVER, you can’t give it unless there is NO metacam in the system still.  I think waiting 2-3 days is the recommended time before adding prednisone.  And as you probably know, pred comes with a list a mile long of side effects.  Depressing the immune system is probably the most far-reaching one, and a rabbit could even come down with fur mites just from being on pred, that they otherwise would’ve managed and been asymptomatic.

 

 This is why some of us are so darned picky about vets and their amount of rabbit experience.  That includes their staff and their training.    We also face risks every time we go into surgery…..  accidents can and do happen.

“I brought my 11 year old Savannah in for a biopsy of some bumps that were all around her tummy area. Left her there and went to the hospital where my mother was. After the biopsy I picked her up and took her home. Put her down and she dragged herself across the floor. Picked her up and brought her back. Her little spine was broken. One of the techs mishandled Savannah when she was waking up from the anesthesia. I just about died……the break was so severe that, well….I left without my baby. Yes, mistakes are made by techs, vets, assistants but at least I knew it was the fault of the hospital staff…I usually never leave my bunnies at the vets because I like to be right there when they wake up. Sometimes buns just have sprains or temporary back injuries as well. Somehow, this bun got injured, whether he kicked or it happened on the table. But, the vet seems to think something happened in the short time the bun was alone…who knows. However it happened, the bun will have to have lots of care in healing and rehabilitation. It doesn’t sound good for any hope of regaining the use of his legs if the back was fractured. I’m so sorry. The owner should join dr and learn about how to look after a disabled rabbit.”

“You don’t know what happened and never will.  Could have been the vet or the vet tech, but injuries to rabbits during handling is far too common.  Hold onto hope and know that he may be okay.  The fact that he has some feeling is a good sign.  Steroids help with inflammation and can help with a back injury.  Did he take an x-ray to verify a broken back?  Take things day by day and know that it is possible for him to recover.  Don’t give up.

Follow-up vet care (including x-rays) may be necessary.  Depending on how things go and how well he heals, future acupuncture may be helpful.

“Yes, unfortunately, I have heard of this happening….on more than one occasion. When rabbits awaken from isoflurane, they often do so in fits and starts and can be somewhat disoriented. My vet has someone monitor rabbits the entire time they’re awakening from isoflurane. If this rabbit wasn’t monitored the entire time, it’s possible he injured himself. Another possibility is that he kicked while he was being handled; if he wasn’t being securely held, that could cause him to break his back.

It’s important that the bunny be given cage rest so he doesn’t injure himself more.  This means limited handling as well.

II. Traumatic Vertebral Fracture (Paralysis of the Hindquarters, Broken Back)

 

 A. Etiology:  This condition has a sudden onset and coincides with struggling or inadequate support of the hindquarters when handling.  Frequently, the incident is not observed (or recognized), and the rabbit is found paralyzed in the cage.  The occurrence is frequent.

 

 B. Clinical Signs:  Posterior paralysis or paresis, loss of skin sensation, and loss of motor control of anal sphinctor and urinary bladder are typical signs. 

 

 C. Pathology:  The most common site of fracture is the L7 lumbar vertebral body or its caudal articular processes.

 

 D. Diagnosis:  The diagnosis is made with clinical signs, neurological examination and/or radiography.

 

 E. Treatment:  If bladder and anal sphinctor control remain intact, and there is still hind limb pain perception, complete recovery may occur within 2 to 4 weeks with cage rest.  Surgical correction and fixation of the fracture is not recommended because of the fragility of the bones.

Our Beau suffered a broken back after having some dental work done.  He was about 10 years old and had osteoporosis, however.  

 

I’m sorry that this happened to their bunny after his neuter surgery.  I hope he has a full recovery.

Hello I am so sorry to hear what happened. As a vet tech Im so upset to hear this happened and no one knows why, were i work we watch bunnies till they are fully awake up moving and eating before we stop watching them and then we check on them every few minutes so we know how they are acting so they don`t hurt them selfs. Working other places I`ve seen techs give IM pain inj in the lumbar musle {around the spine} and they where untrained and left the poor bunny paralized.Not saying its right but maybe you should ask where the post-op pain meds where given? Make sure if not already on pain meds to be put on pain meds Medicam is the best in my expereince, its a pain med and a anti-inflamatory to.{ has work great for my paralizied bunnies I`ve taken into rescue.} I hope all works out for the best hope and this was of some help.

Okay, this is tragic beyond belief. Have you had xrays done? Is it a clean break, a small break or just a crack? There are instances where a rabbit can injure their backs but depending on the severity, they CAN completely recover. And yes, get him on some pain meds, that poor little thing. And I would quickly find myself another vet. Sorry, but something *smells* if you know what I mean. They are not being honest with you IMO.

I echo the suggestions from Katnip.  I would highly recommend that your practice pay for a visit to a neurologist.  The request is not odd or wrong.  I agree most practices will bend over backwards when something goes wrong.  I believe that a neurologist would be able to provide more specific expertise. You may want to look into FL’s vet school practices.  I live in PA and have contacted the small animal specialist w/ various odd questions via email.  She was responsive w/ my general questions.  Specifically I contacted her to see if she could use my pet therapy rabbits for a speuter demo.  Somehow in that e-conversation we had discussed concerns about breaking rabbit backs and/or necks (It was a while ago, cant remember).

I also concur that it is very likely that Pietro had a bad post-anesthesia arousal.  This happens w/ all breeds of animals.  UPenn’s vet hospital has their horses recover from anesthesia in a swimming pool to avoid injuries.  Some animals just thrash around when they come up.  Or as stated it could be malpractice.

Continue to work w/ your practice, but see about having them pay for a 2nd opinion or specialist.  Not sure if you are anywhere near a vet school….but that might make a good roadtrip. 

When my Jess was on major cage rest post wound repair and stitches to her belly, I kept her in a small dog kennel.  I used a large cat litterpan in the kennel and that was all she could move in.  It kept her very limited, but she recovered very well.  Broke my heart to see her trapped in such a small space, but I needed to keep her super limited.  Please keep us updated.  My thoughts are w/ you during this difficult time.

Thank you all for the kind words, support and guidance. However, we let Pietro go on Friday night. He deteriorated rapidly once we got home from the vet. He would not eat a thing, even his favourite treats (which were not recommended, but I was willing to try just to get some food in him). He started acting very strange (ie throwing his limp body around his already padded cage and then not being able to even hold his head up) so I put him in a burrito and I decided we needed emergency care. I couldnt bear to see the pain and confusion in his eyes and as much as we ached and prayed we had him put to rest. I finally got a call from my vet today saying how truly sorry he was. We continue to pray for his little soul in heaven.

I am so sorry to hear about your losing Pietro. I know it must have been very hard on you, but you definitely made the right decision. I also lost a bunny during a spay procedure, and I know how much it hurts because it is so unexpected.
