BUNNY 911 – If your rabbit hasn’t eaten or pooped in 12-24 hours, call a vet immediately! Don’t have a vet? Check out VET RESOURCES

Here’s the story, we recieved Sunny from a pet store( at the time, I was 11. I didn’t know the things about pet stores then like I do now, at 13) I did, however, notice that a few of her nails were over grown and a bit crooked.
So, yesterday when I pick her up to put her in her cage for the night, I noticed her front (left I believe) foot second nail was bloody (old scabby blood so whatever mishap she had was earlier in the day/yesterday/a few days ago.) and almost all the way out. I went to show my mom and the next time I look, it’s gone. I guess it just fell out, but it didn’t bleed, and I didn’t see the quick, so I guess that came off too?
Well, a few weeks ago there was a mishap where her nail got caught in a heating vent (don’t worry, it wasn’t on) and when I picked her up, it snapped off.
The vet, maybe a year after we got her, had to take 2 off because they were just so over grown and crooked from poor treatment at the pet shop.
Is she gonna be okay? She’s an indoor rabbit and the only pet (besides mice and gerbils, but they don’t roam around the place) we have, so it’s not like she’s fighting for anything. She’s always taken care of her own paws, cleaning them, but I always poor a bit on* warm water of them.
Are you comfortable trimming their nails? IF not the vet will do it and show you how it doesn’t cost much. I wonder if they are too long and are getting caught and hung up in stuff.
Sounds like you really love your bunny. And being 13 years old thats very good
The mishap in w/the heating vent, that wasmy mistake, I let them get too long. But, any other time, my mom has trimmed her nails (she’s not still for me, but w/my mom she’s fine ) or we’ve taken her to the vet a few times and they’ve done it, so yes, her nails get cut regularly.
I would just call the vet and ask if she needs to see her, or if you should just put something on it to prevent infection. (Neosporin can be used at times, but I would rather your vet advise you first.)
Poor Sunny thats funny that she has such nail problems! What is her diet like? Does she do well eating her hay? I wonder if she is missing some nutrient in her diet that would make her nails stronger. Does she get dark green leafy veggies every day?
Do you mean you put warm water on them, when their is a prob-like when one broke off? Or you regularly soak them? (sorry! Confused!)
I agree with Moobunny-perhaps you could have the vet takea look-could be a deficiency, and they are really weak or frail?
Sorry about that, I meant on them, and when they’ve broken, (only then), to make sure she doesn’t have an infection. Yes, I know there’s medicinces but at the time I didn’t have any.
Sunny gets all her vegetables..2 cups (usually mustard greens, romaine lettuce, and baby spinach, and 1/4th cup of pellets. I have to get some hay tomorrow or the next day since we unfortunatley ran out, but shes getting her nutrients.
If you are trimming her nails monthly and she is still having problems with her nails you should ask the vet- she could have a fungal infection, an infection or something else that is causing problems with her nails.
Yes, I know there’s medicinces but at the time I didn’t have any.
Polysporin or neosporin is about six dollars and you can pick it up in any drugstore-go pick some up, and put on the nails-it’s really really important to prevent infection and it’s a cheap way to do it
I agree with katnip-this isn’t normal so a vet check is a good idea
