On Sunday, we caught a bunny that someone apparently let loose in the park next to our house. We took her to the rabbit Foster here, but they were full. They did give me a full set of bunny gear to get started with. Unfortunately, we are getting ready to move 8 hours away and our cat has cancer, so it’s just a terrible time for us to have a new pet. We have friends who are willing to take her but it won’t be until next week. I’ve included a picture of her setup. Take a look and let me know if you think there’s anything else I should add for her.

She is getting fresh veggies, Apple twigs, two kinds of hay, and a little bit under a quarter cup of pellets. She also likes kale and cilantro so far, I haven’t added more veggies in yet though because I don’t want to shock her little system. Oh, well she’s had some carrot, but only like an inch or so a day because I know she shouldn’t have more. I just give her the ends that I chop off when I cut up a carrot for my son’s lunch. Anything else I should add or not add?

Thank you for rescuing this bunny and caring for her. Your picture isn’t showing. An x-pen or XL dog crate can be a good pen for a rabbit, if that is what you were given. A rabbit will still need adequate out of cage/pen time every day, in a bunny proofed room. Sturdy food and water bowls that can’t be tipped over are good. A fleece blanket makes something soft for them to lay on. Rabbits like hidey boxes, but if a rabbit is in an x-pen, make sure that it can’t use the box to jump out of the pen. It’s good to go slow with veggies, like you’ve been doing. Some rabbits like to play with toys, such as small willow rings, which can be tossed around and chewed on, there are other rabbit safe toys you could try, or just place paper towel tubes around for her to toss and chew on. A litter box with rabbit safe litter should be provided.

If you haven’t already done so, take a look at the BUNNY INFO section here. There is a link at the top of the page. It has a lot of great info on the basics of rabbit care. It sounds like your friends are going to take the rabbit, so give them that link if they aren’t versed in rabbit care.

I’m sorry about your cat. I hope that your move will go well.

Thank you for rescuing her! Sorry about your kitty, that all sounds very stressful.

The set up looks pretty good, I would just be careful with the stuffed animal, and keep an eye on the blankets to make sure she doesn’t chew them, especially the stuffed animal.

If she does start chewing the blankets a lot, you can put down cardboard and fleece blankets to protect your floor. Fleece is safer if they accidentally ingest some.

I like the box with the hay, I would just remove the tape in case she chews that part. Most people provide hay in or near the litter box to encourage them to use the box (as most bunnies like to poop while they eat hay).

She also might appreciate a box with two entry holes cut out so she can use it as a hide-out.

Her markings look like my Bertha!

An inch of carrot a day might be a bit too much, but you can gauge from her poops. If she produces extra squishy ones, she’s prob getting too much carrot.

A good next veggie to introduce is romaine lettuce or carrot tops (the leafy green part). Dandelion greens are also very popular, nutritious, and well-tolerated.

Box has two entries – I read that on here so thank you! I will remove the tape. Stiffed animals are pet proof and she likes to toss them but doesn’t chew. Thanks for the fleece tip – I will go buy a few yards for her. I have plenty of apple cuttings so so far no chewing. I tried hay in the box and she peed on it. Tried it next to the litter box and she peed on it so in her cardobard house it goes. She is 100% pee litter trained and about 80 % poop so I will take it!

Thank you! She does get free range time. At least a couple hours a day in a bunny proof room with supervison.
