Earlier today my first bunny Oreo suddenly died. It was so sudden and I’m so heartbroken because I can’t get any closure. He was fine for one second and we look over a couple minutes later and he’s completely limp. We tried to drive him to the hospital 15 minutes away and mid way there he started twitching and made a small squeak. I knew in my heart there was no hope but he was still breathing when we got there but only after a couple of minutes of him being with the vet they came out and said he had no pulse. I’m just so upset and feel so empty inside. I don’t want to ever get a pet again if this is how it’s going to feel every time they’re gone. What’s worse is he was still a baby and I only had him for a bit over two months. I just don’t know how to get over him and I don’t want to keep on crying every couple of minutes. He was truly the cutest and sweetest bunny ever and I loved him so much. Tomorrow is my 20th birthday and I just know I’m going to be haunted by it every year. Any advise would be appreciated. I just don’t know how to go on

I’m sorry for your loss. Did you get a necropsy done? I know you’re in the angry and upset stage, I was too when Patches died. We get animals to take care of them for however long we are supposed to. They are here to teach us lessons-good and bad ones. It will always hurt when they are gone because we loved them. There are some things we can’t control. A necropsy can help give closure if the death was from genetics, since you couldn’t have done anything. And with babies, they can go at anytime, from infection or something congenital. He could have had an infection you just didn’t know about. Bunnies are just very fragile.Animals make us a better person and that is why I will always have them, yes death hurts but they are always with us.

In time you will move on from sadness and anger and you may even want to get another animal to love.

So sorry. Buns are fragile like that. Owning pets is all about giving them the best life possible. When they pass and you’re absolutely heartbroken, it just shows how much they were loved and always will be.
