We adopted our girls Siggi and Strega on 9/18/18. I’ve had hose rabbits most of my life (20+ years) and volunteered at a Rabbit Rescue for 2 years.

After my last pair crossed the bridge in 2011, I took a break. But this year, my husband and I looked forward to adding a new pair to our lives.

We adopted these beautiful girls in September, but this morning, when I went to give them their fresh hay Strega had passed. We immediately checked her for signs of a fight or distress, there were none. She looked so peaceful and she was even still warm. We rushed her to the rescue, where they found some signs of stasis, but said they would have their vet necropsy her.

I know stasis well, but last night Strega was eating, drinking, pooping and playing normal. We laid on the rug with her for hours like we always did before putting her and her mate Siggi in the pen for the night. I checked on them around 3am and they were well. I am so sad/angry/confused. The necropsy results said she had beginning of stasis but they now think she may have suffered a heart attack.

How could this happen? She was so healthy and happy just last night. I am in incredible shock. I just don’t understand how my beautiful girl can be gone.

I am so sorry for your loss

I doubt the beginning signs of stasis would cause a sudden death like that, I think the suspicion of a heart attack is more likely. She might have even been starting to go into stasis because her heart was already having issues (but that were unnoticeable)?

How is Siggi doing? Hopefully you can be a comfort to each other while you both grieve.

It probably isn’t much comfort right now, but it sounds like she passed painlessly and without suffering, and that she was well loved in the short time she was with you.

Again, I’m so sorry, hugs to you and nose rubs to Siggi.

Thank you @DanaNM, I think she did pass peacefully. Siggi had a tough day, she just started pooping normally a few hours ago. She was overly affectionate and clingy most of the day. I spent the whole day on the rug with her and she got tons of fresh greens. I think tonight will be rough because she will sleep alone, for the first time in her entire life.

Thank you for your kindness. I am truly still so shocked and in disbelief.

I have lost 2 bunnies this way in the last couple of months. 1 we had for 9 months and the 2nd one only for 4 weeks. It’s really hard when you feel like you failed them after only having them for such a short time. I don’t really know what to say other than I feel your pain, and you can be doing everything right but bunnies are so fragile and they just die sometimes.
