Since I switched to fresh hay my dad buys in bales Oreo my lop seems to not get enough of it, sometimes eatting 2 or three handfuls a day….he also gets 1/8th a cup of less active pellets and 2 to 3 cups of greens latley it has been mixed greens.

Can you give to much hay?

Also my baby Harley who is going to be three months eats like crazy too, should I ever limit him or wait till he is around 6 or 7 months. Right now he will eat a bowl plus some pellets, LOTS of alfalfa and even the alfalfa cubes……like when is enough enough?

Sorry I dont mean to post os many questions but I hate second guessing myself when all you bunny lovers are at my finger tips I appreciate everything u guys have done so far

What kind of hay is it?

If it’s Timothy or Orchard, then no you don’t have to worry about giving too much. Rabbits should have unlimited access to hay 24/7 to eat.

But if it’s Oat, and you notice weight gain, then you would want to add Timothy or Orchard Mix.

And of course, Alfalfa hay, at your bunny’s age would only be good for a treat.

^^^along the lines of what BB said, the alfalfa is fine for the baby still. but what you might do to get Harley used to the grass hays too, is mix alfalfa with the timothy hay, maybe half and half. this way when 6-7 months rolls around, he’s familiar with tim hay when he starts getting limited alfalfa. if he likes the cubes, you can actually purchase timothy cubes. while they don’t have the same fiber benefit as real hay, they are a yummy snack. maybe Oreo would like them too?

your diet sounds great! what do you mean by “less active” pellets tho? i’m not familiar with that term…

i’ve found that mine go thru cycles where they will eat a ton of hay, then less for awhile, and then they increase it again… it’s good that you’re aware of what they’re eating and in what quantities.

Its great that your bunny likes hay so much! I noticed that when I switched to fresh hay from feed stores that my bunnies also went crazy for they hay – I think that they really like fresh stuff And to answer the original questions, no I don’t think a bunny can eat too much hay UNLESS it is the wrong kind of hay, like alfalfa, or if it is oat hay and causing the bunny to gain a lot of weight. I did feed my bunnies fresh oat hay bales for a year and did not notice them having any weight gain related to it, but it can have different effects on different bunnies.

I will ask my dad but I am sure it is Timothy but I will ask, Oreo doesnt get Alfalfa he has had it maybe 3 times since i have had him. I got I got alot of Timothy cubes from bunfest Oreo HATES them but Harley likes them I try to give him those when he is biting the litterbox still having a hard time switching him over to something he is demolishing the litter box.

But I will check what type of hay ti is and get back.

As for less active Martin’s makes a food for less active bunnies, Oreo is not active at all so we use this brand and he LOVES it where as Harlley gets the normal stuff lol as he is HYPER lol

oh okay! thanks for the link. that looks like pretty good food. i use the oxbow bunny basics T and they don’t have anything called “less active”, but it sounds like a pretty basic timothy pellet.
