Ok so I thought I would share this in case others were dealing with a similar issue.

Molly is no longer a baby so I stopped giving her alfalfa hay around a month ago. We tried timothy hay, but she would not eat it. So we tried orchard grass hay, and she took to that much better. However, she wasn’t eating as much of it as she used to eat the alfalfa, and I was worried she wans’t getting enough. 

I cut back on the pellets, but even still she was hardly touching the hay (even tho she immediately showed a preference for the orchard  over timothy previously) and would gobble up the pellets like she was starving! 

So this is what I tried: I took a toilet paper roll that was in her cage that she never plays with, and stuffed it full of hay. The result: she immediatley starts nibbling at the hay and trying to get it out! I think making getting the hay into a game has worked to encourage her to eat it because I notice that she eats a lot more from the pile of hay I leave in her cage as well! This is great I’m happy it worked!!

That’s great! Sometimes they can be just like picky little kids – they keep telling you they don’t like something but once they finally try it they realize it’s pretty yummy 😛

HAHAHA thats such a perfect comparrison!! I tried giving her some starwberries as a treat, and she wouldn’t go near it! Then after like 5 minutes she slowly made her way over to the bowl, tried a nibble, then gobbled them all up!!

Mine loves the roll hay trick. What I find funny though is I must stuff it too tight because mine doesn’t pull the hay strand out, he eats them all the way to the tube opening. It’s funny because I’ll pull it out and it’s a perfect line cylinder.

Haha I’ve noticed I’m packing it into the tube too tight too cuz the exact same thing happens! I’ll try packing it more loosely. I guess she likes to work for it, but not TOO hard lol

haha if she’s eating it the way you pack it then you probably can keep doing it that way and what I do is just pull it out a little more and let him go at it again

I tried packing it more loosely and she seems to be eating more So glad I figured out this trick hopefully it will work for someone else too
