Okay so Smuge has never been perfect with her litter box. She pees in it everytime no accidents ever but she leaves poops EVERYWHERE! I really noticed this after we switched from her old cage to her new condo. I thought it was marking behaviour and it would stop once she was settled or at least go back to the few here and there she had before. BOY was I wrong! They are everywhere!! So any ideas? I know she might never be perfect but I would like to lessen puffs left all over the place. Some of them may be getting kicked out when she hops out but most are being dropped. Here’s some things I was thinking might help. Let me know what you think.

        1. Bigger litter box? The one she has right now is a small cat box but perhaps she’d like something bigger, she never lies down in her box.

        2. Hay ONLY in the box. I have hay in the box as well as a ball hanging above the box that is reachable from it. There is also a hay rack in her cage.

        3. Cleaning out more often? Currently I clean about every 2 days. But I could up that to more often.

        4. More or less litter in the box? I’m not sure if this makes a difference…

Those are my ideas but I’m not sure how many actually apply to this. Any help would be great!!!

Edited to add: OOPS this probably should have gone in “Behavior” I thought I was there… but apparently not.. Any of the admins feel free to move it if you like. Sorry again!

I think all good ideas Instead of vaccuming or sweeping the poops, put them in the box

Hmm I never thought of that one. I’ve been vaccuming them all up but I will try putting them in the box as soon as I see them.

I have a step-bunny who leave poops everywhere, too. I wish I had an answer, too…

I just thought I’d give a little update! I got a litter box that was twice the size of Smudge’s old one and we have cut down the stray poops from 1GAZILLION to maybe 5 here or there. YAAAAAAAY Also with this bigger box it is much easier to put hay right in there for her which I think is helping too!

OH and K&K – I started picking up the poops and just dropping them back into the box and its soooooooo cute haha every time I pick some up Smudge will follow my hand from wherever she is in her condo to the box and watch me put them in then I get this look like “excuse me what do you think you’re doing? If I wanted those in there I would have done it in the first place!” hahahah well it’s alot to get from a look but I swear if she could talk… that’s what she’d say. Then she ALWAYS has to jump in the box and see what the ignorant human has messed up!

my two have started doing this. when i bonded them, they had two litterboxes, then i took one out so they only had one. they were fine with that. then suddenly the number of stray poos have been increasing. they are all right around the litterbox tho… so i put the second box back in. it’s helped but still not perfect. so i’m gonna have to be a bit more diligent on getting them trained again.

Beka, how do you do that? I mean, what do you DO in being “diligent on getting them trained”?

My 2 are fine, but Flower just drops a trail everywhere she goes. Not piles. Doesn’t stop moving, just poops while moving. Her litter box is plenty big enough to lie down in. All her hay is in her box. No litter anywhere else. BF just moved, but she’d been in the previous apartment for several weeks, so I don’t think it was marking… Honestly, I don’t think she’s the brightest bun. We can’t seem to modify her behavior, because her behavior seems sort of random and unplanned…

                    No, she’s not fixed yet…

Can anyone give me any tips anyway?

i’m going to start doing hay in the boxes again (even tho it wastes a lot) and pick up the stray poos constantly (every hour) as i see them instead of waiting and sweeping up once a day. i don’t really think i need to reduce their run area since they don’t go anywhere else…
