Stray bunny troubles

So Sunday night there was this big white rabbit following people at a gas station. One of those people happened to be a friend of mine. I lost my rabbit in July of 2016 due to cancer and I took his loss very hard, and I wasn’t ready to take another one in, but it came down to either I take her in or she stays outside.. So here we are, she is with me now and I named her Desdemona.

Desdemona is a large white female bunny with lilac points and brown eyes. I tried to get her scanned for a chip but the clinic I brought her to told me in order to just scan I would have to surrender her FIRST, and then she’d be brought to my towns most notorious kill shelter. So after a long argument, I told them to forget it, left, and made an appointment with my vet Thursday anyway. Whether or not this is the right thing to do is up to your own judgement.

Right off the bat she had severe earmites and overgown incisors. I’ve been treating her ears with topical stuff before I see my vet for Revolution. But here’s the thing- She hasn’t peed since she was caught Sunday at 6pm. Not a single drop. She is drinking fine. But she is not urinating. Her food bowl is still full too. She isn’t underweight, the opposite actually- which makes me question if she’s pregnant.

Thursday she is getting revolution, a fecal, palpated for babies and potentially cystocentesis. I probably cannot do a CBC or afford a teeth floating the same day because it’s far too expensive.

I live on Long Island, NY and our famous rabbit rescue Long Island Rabbit Rescue Group only pulls rabbits from kill shelters.. so they won’t take her.

I am doing my best by her, but I am worried.

I am switching her diet tonight to just watered vegetables, and hoping by some miracle she will hang tight until Thursday. The clinic I brought her to was a 24 hour emergency clinic, so in the event of an emergency I worry if they would take her from me because legally she “isn’t” mine.

First thanks for taking the bunny home and caring. Two you made the attempt to locate the owner and you could not find him or her. To my knowledge unless your state is a mandatory chip state 98.98% the bun won t have a chip and like hell if your going to send him to a kill shelter.

Possession is 9/10ths of the law (literally) and most likely this bun was abandoned cause that could not care for it properly. I won’t say that lying is a good thing but as long as you tell the vet that the bun was a stray and I’m going to be taking care of it from now on there should not be an issue.

Thank you very much for taking her in! Keeping her instead of surrendering her is of course the better option to take, so thank you for taking it

Does she have a litter box with soft bedding? Have you tried massaging her bladder a bit to either help her release urine and to see if there is any swelling? When you press on her tummy, does it feel like there are bubbles or rocks? Keep trying to find food that she wants to eat. You may need to try different types of grass hays as well, since not all bunnies like timothy hay. If you feel she may have a bladder infection or a UTI, you can put pure unsweetened cranberry juice mixed into her water to help out. One of my buns gets UTIs often and cranberry juice mixed with his water always helps him out

We got some pee today! Her enclosure does have a litterbox with wood pellets. ? I will still bring this up with my vet.

Yeah, the clinic was arguing legalities with me and told me legally I “had” to surrender her and i’m just like, let me make this clear, she is NOT going to a kill shelter, I don’t care what you’re threatening me with. Ultimately I think I made the right choice too. She is sick. She needs help.

The appointment is tomorrow morning at 9:45 AM. Bringing some poops with me too. Hoping everything is okay. ?

Update.. Just got back from the vet. He prescribed Laxatone, gave her dewormer, Revolution, and checked for a chip. No chip! He 100% does agree with what i’m doing, and even went off to tell her what a lucky freaking rabbit is, and how I have a lot of love to give her since losing my boy ? He told me she looks like she’s a year old and we’re gonna make sure she lives a long, healthy life..

The verdict: Not pregnant!

He also advised to add some pineapple juice to her water, which I did, to stimulate everything in the gut. So far everything is looking okay for Dessie.

Her fecal came back negative!
She weighed in at 9lb 10oz and still needs to gain a few according to my vet ? She’s a big girl. She doesn’t seem to like rabbit food.. She likes hay, vegetables, and treats, but not food, which is weird but I guess we can make it work.

She keeps flipping her litterbox over which was driving me nuts, so I punched a hole in the side of the box, fed a zip tie through and have it clipped to the side of the cage with a carabiner. So far so good.

She is peeing A LOT, and pooping just as much, which makes me ironically happy.

She is a sweet girl, who seems to want attention but is hand-shy. She will follow you, bump you with her nose, paw at you, but the second you touch her she runs off. I think in due time she will warm up.. I wonder how long she was surviving the street life by herself. She has a notch in her ear which looks trauma related. But she was incredibly easy to litter train (actually had no accidents outside) and drink from a bottle which makes me think someone at some point DID care about her. It’s just so odd how she wound up at a gas station, right off of a highway.
