The other day, ,I went out and bought a WHOLE BALE of STRAW HAY for about $8.  I decided to use this instead of store bought litters because it just wasn’t enough and costing me too much.

So far, I really like it better than the store-bought litters and my buns seem to like it too.  Not only is it more cost effective, it doesn’t fly out like the other litters.  Right now, I’m mixing half Straw Hay and Yesterday’s Newspaper so that they can get used to it.

The only thing that bugs me is that the bale is pretty big.  I think it’s around 50 lbs.  So I had to clean my garage to make room for it.

I’ve been using hay for litter now (solves the problem of expensive litters, unsafe litter etc.) and I am going to be buying a bale as well…here is what I thought of, though I dont’ know if it will work for you…

I am emptying the trunk of my car, lining it with a tarp and keeping the hay bale in there. Then I will take a flake in as I need it! Would that work for you maybe?

I think the only real advantage to putting pellet litters into the boxes is to cut down on the urine smell.  If you are willing to change the box every day or two, hay and/or straw should be a fine bedding for the litterbox.  Just make sure that you make it deep enough so that the bun’s feet do not touch the urine and get tracked all over the place.

yeah…actually I’ve been putting SOME yesterdays news in the bottom…I have to change the litter every two days…My boyfriend complains big time if we go any longer. I clean their home every day and then muck the entire thing out plus change litter every two days…Oh to be a rabbit slave!!

I’m glad you found something that is affordable and works for you! I agree with Osprey’s reply too.

Today I actually noticed their feet looking yellow. I think it’s from their pee. I’m thinking I should put some newspapers underneath and add more hay to it. I’m also liking that I dont need to worry about eating it and having troubles like the other litters

I was just going to suggest placing something absorbent in the bottom for urine like newspaper. Make sure the bale stays dry (to avoid mold) and so creatures don’t make a home out of it.  I have mine in a bale-sized plastic container in the garage. Also you’ll want to make sure that it isn’t stored next to pesticies, fertilizers etc. that could be toxic.
