        Hello Rabbit Lovers

A friend recused a rabbit from a kindergarten, where it wasn’t being looked after well. She’s gone on holiday and left the rabbit with us for 6 weeks, as we have our own rabbit.

The rescued rabbit was in need of some TLC when it arrived. It’s now developed some growths on its ears and nose… It’s fur isn’t looking great yet. If’s not falling how, but just not nice and shiny. Looks a bit scraggy on the legs. (It has been weeing in it’s bed though,so perhaps just needs a bit of a clearner environment?)

For some reason, I can’t upload the image and the code won’t show. So here’s a link to the ears photo:

        Ear Growths

So, a couple of worrying questions:-
        a) Is the rabbit ok? Or does action need to be taken?
        b) Is this going to be something that our rabbit has caught? And do we need to do anything to stop our rabbit ending up looking the same?

Thank you for all your rabbity help! It’s much appreciated!

This rabbit is not OK and absolutely needs veterinary attention.

Yes, you should quarantine this rabbit away from yours. This is standard procedure, regardless of the severe ear condition or not. Keep items separate and be mindful of your clothes. It is unknown until any new rabbit is taken to the vet what they may have.

The extent of the ear condition makes it hard to identify because I suspect there was something minor that naturally was not treated which makes the ears then susceptible to further infection/injury. It’s possible something like mites is the primary, and now there are secondary things, like open scabs that then got infected or just simply an injury that continued to get worse.

This is one of the pictures:

I first thought Shope papilloma virus, but that’d be rare in a rabbit in Europe.

I agree with Wick that the rabbit should be seen by a vet, and preferably be kept apart from your other rabbits until you have a better idea of what’s going on.

Thank you for taking in this bun!
