Today we had tornadoes go through the town. I had to grab my bunny and dog and high tail it to the basement with my friend. I want to be better prepared for next time, we have a lot of tornadoes in the summer.

What would be good things to keep in this little “kit?” And would having a small portable hand cage come in handy?

i have herd of pop up cat carriers that are made out of fabric and it just pops up, but you have to keep your hand underneath the carrier. thats a easy carrier… and you could keep food dishes in a plasitc bag with some pellets but make sure that you change the pellets so they don’t get old. and you could keep a normal water bottle ( not a bunny water bottle) filled with water in the fridge so you could grab it and go. thats just a quick kit you could put togather.

I have an “Emergency Getaway” kit that sits right beside my door (you have to go outside to get to the basement as well). It has carriers for all of my animals (bigger dogs are on leashes too heave to carry fast lol), inside each carrier is a blanket, attached food bowls and water bottles (bowls for the dogs), a small amount of food in ziplock bag (I change this regularly), a bag of hay (rabbits only) and a toy (in case it is a long stay). I keep water stocked up in the basement as well as my car so I don’t have to worry about that. I also have a care kit attached to the side of one of the carriers.

It usually takes me under a minute to get everyone packed up and out the door. It took me awhile to train them but the dogs are trained when a whistle blows they line up under their leashes. And I just shake a raisin box for the rabbits and the ferrets are usually asleep so they are grab and go.

In case you haven’t noticed I am terrified of anything happening and not being able to get my animals out in time lol

We’ve only done this twice (in one day) for a tornado warning. We have a big tub of hay in our basement for when we refill their hay racks (the rest of the bale is in the garage that isn’t attached to the house). We also have x-pens in the basement so if it’s a tornado watch or a long warning then they won’t be stuck in their cages. We have a sink in our basement so we’re ok with water. We have an extra fridge in our basement too that has the extra lettuce. We’re hoping our next house that the basement will be finished and they will be housed down there so we wouldn’t have to rush them down there…plus to save their condo haha!
Sonn it took me 10 min. for us the first time…because Archie knew we were putting him in the cage and Gracie peed all over the place when I went to get her (including flicking her pee soaked feet at my face yuck!).

Yep I have used mine multiple times due to Tornado warnings and high winds knocking trees over.

The first time it took nearly 30 minutes because Pacey HATED being put in a carrier so I started training him that the carrier was a fun thing with toys and treats lol. The first time he took the litter box (forgot to include that in my other post litter boxes) and flung it pee and poop and litter went everywhere it was very gross.

When the tornado sirens went off last week, I just grabbed Pepper and we hing out in the bathtub for a while while I watched the storm progress on my iPod. But her carrier is in the kitchen and pretty easy to grab and go in the event of a fire alarm – the hard part is catching the bunny

Stormy already lives in the basement – all we would do is grab his cage, move it to the bathroom. His extra hay is on top of it, all of his stuff is inside of it. Then we would clog the sink and have it fill with water while we still have water.

In the event of fire, we’d all have to run out of the house without him because we’d have to travel through the entire house to get to him, but the first words out of my mouth to a fireman would be “basement glass sliding door – my rabbit’s just inside in his cage”. Either that, or I would be running around the house and breaking the glass of the door myself. That would probably be more likely.

Wow…such an reminder for me that emergency kits are needed for other natural disasters besides earthquakes. It must be scary having to worry about such incredible storms.

I’ve lived in Chicago for more than 20 years and this wasonly the second  time I ever heard tornado sirens when they weren’t just being tested,

Since I live on the 3rd floor I thought about heading for the basement, but I’m also the president of my condo board and I know that it’s a 100 yr old brick building and the basement might actually not be any safer!  It is unlikely that we would get an actual tornado, due to the fact than I’m less than 1/2 mile from the lake shore and right in the urban heat island.  Straightl ine winds are more likely (and this storm had them clocked at 75mph.)

So I decided that the bathroom with the 2 walls of pipes and the other wall supported by the less-than-2-yr-old-decks was the place to be.  i literally sat in the (empty) tub with her – mostly to keep her from jumping out.  I had water and pellets but she was bored and antsy.  I watched the radar on my iPod since i have a wireless network, and afte about 10 minutes I could see that the one leg of the storm that was over me was pretty much passed, so I let her out and she got a couple of craisins.

It’s officially hurricane season here in FL. I’m shopping this week for a small cage that I can store at my parent’s house, which is our safe place, if we need to leave the apartment. I will keep it in a box there until it’s time to unpack it. I have a hurricane emergency duffle bag for bunny supplies, and an emergency bag for myself. We’ve become complacent the last couple of years because we were finally spared. But for 2 years in a row we had about 4 each season. Katrina passed right through here, but it was young and only a Category 1. It hit the gulf coast, regrouped, and became a Category 5 when it hit New Orleans. After that, we had Wilma, which was a 4 and much worse for the coast just north of me.

I had Spockie and we regularly stayed at my folks for nearly a week each time. Samantha has never done this yet, so I want to make her comfortable if we go there this summer.
