There are times when it seems my greens wilt way too fast. What is the best way to store them?? Do you wash it, tear it, then store it? ….Tear it, store it, then wash it as you use it?? ….Wash it, store it, then tear it as you need it??? UGH…it can’t be that complicated can it? Also, what do you store your greens in??

I have had luck getting parsley and cilantro to keep for about a week without becoming wilted. When I get them home I cut the bands holding the bunches and spread them out on paper towels. If the bunches are too wet I dry them, replace the towels, roll them in the towels and place them in vegetable storage bags and put them in the veggie drawer in the fridge. Occasionally I have replaced to paper towels in the middle of the week if they get too wet. I wash them just before giving them to the rabbit. I think I have read that greens should not be stored too wet because they will wilt faster and our vet gave us the idea that by serving them wet it helps keep the bunny hydrated.

Definitely store it and only wash what you need – once you cut or rip the leaves off they start to lose moisture. Also, washing them ahead of time can make them soggy.

I just throw mine in the fridge (not the drawers – that’s where the human veggies go 😛 ) in the grocery store bags they come in. I’ve never had a problem with something not lasting a week, though I do try to use up the rapidly wilting ones first, and leave the thick romaine for later in the week.

I take the band off the greens and store in one of those plastic green bags, and I leave it open so some air can get into it. I wash only directly before I feed it.

My greens keep for over a week with no wilting and I wash them before I store them.

I open the bunches of parsley and cilantro, and separate the leaves of romaine. Throw out any stuff that doesn’t look good. Wash each type of veggie separately. Then I store them in a way that I found out about on this site. I have three rectangular stackable plastic tupperware containers with holes poked through one side for ventilation. I put one paper towel flat on the bottom, then a layer of veggies, then another paper towel, and another layer of veggies etc. until I’m done. One type of veggie per container.

I only really shake out the veggies before layering them in the container. I don’t let them dry completely or anything, and they’re still pretty wet when they go in.

Makes it so much easier to just pull out veggies from each container to feed Sammy. I’d rather do all the hard work on the day I buy the veggies, and then be able to do things much more quickly in the morning/evening for the following week.
