I have a stupid question, but how does getting a certain number of signatures stop the event? I understand that if it becomes widely known that people disagree with the event then they might think twice about hold the event but how does getting x number of signatures stop it?
The petition goes to a number of organisations and political people (as listed under the description of the event). The more signatures that are on the petition, the more notice they will take and will be more likely to listen. If someone approached them with a petition with 200 signatures on it, they won’t take much notice, but if you have 30,000 or 100,000 people opposed to something, you’ve gained some big attention and it’s in their best interest to review the event otherwise those 100,000 people can cause an even bigger stir about it. The more signatures, the more power behind it.
