Stinky Bunny!

Hi Everyone,

I have a weird problem (I think it’s weird anyway) with my boy bunny, BunBun (used to be Ludicris). He is a little guy, only about 4-5 lbs, with a delicate tummy. Of course he has no idea his tummy is delicate and is constantly begging for treats. I cannot open a bag of cereal without him shooting into the room and wrapping himself around my feet- it’s hilarious. Anyway, obviously when his belly is upset, he gets that nasty cecal odor and leaves little presents smeared all over the furniture for us- I understand that. But lately, we’ve noticed that regardless of whether he is overproducing cecals, he smells when he gets excited. Not when he’s begging for treats, but when he’s being a bad bun and digging the fluff out of my couch cushions (which he does every day ) he stinks to high heaven. His butt was resting on my throw blanket today and he smelled it up so much it needs to go in the wash. But then, half an hour later when he is calm, he is completely odor-free. Could it be his anal glands? (Ewww- this is all so unattractive- hard to believe I’m talking about the world’s most adorable species of animal).

 BunBun eats very well and never seems ill. My only concern is that since he was originally found in our backyard, living outside, that he could have a parasite of some sort irritating his stomache. Then again, many bunnies graze outside in runs and it doesn’t seem to be a concern.

  Any ideas?

Since he was found outside I highly recommend getting a fecal test.

Also have you had him neutered yet? Regardless of if he is yet or not, I would recommend the fecal test.

Hi Sarita,
Yes, we rescued him over a year ago, and had him neutured right away. I will call my vet to see about the fecal test. OMG, I’ll feel awful if all this time I just assumed he had a delicate tummy and he’s really been sick. Well, best to find out now so he can be “debugged” if neccessary. Thanks for the advice.

Oh I was about to do my ‘neuter chant’ …because the smell is often yucky parts.

Don’t feel bad. We cannot be experts all the time on everything,, and it could be that he has a delicate tummy!! It’s a SUPER idea to have a fecal float and check though. Deworming is not routine, so you’ll know from the test if necessary.

The look on my hubby’s face when I giggled at the “yucky parts” and then told him why i giggled was just to die for. lol!

fecal test definitely. He shouldn’t be smellign that bad if he’s got his “yucky bits” removed. *giggle*

Yucky parts… LMAO- so descriptive… Monkeybun, I can imagine your hubby’s face when he heard that. Men tend to be so proud of those parts… and protective too!
Anyway, I’ll call the vet today to schedule the fecal test. I know nothing about them- I’m assuming that you bring a “sample” from home…? And hoping it’s not terribly expensive…

yes that is  a good one.

Even neutered rabbits put out odors.  They mark things with this skunky odor.   Hopefully it is just that and not parasites. 

I get skunky smells from Cotton when he digs on my shirts. I am sure he needs anal cleaning and nail trims right now but going thru all this treatment for his lip I am reluctant to do it right now.  But I get skunky odors from him sometimes.  Marking.  I would rather that then peeing on me.  Remember my video with Cotton digging on me and leaving me 2 poops.  2 skunky smelling ones  rofl…

Yep they get yucky parts that smell.  Anal glands.

“like…when I was trying to teach Mikey ‘take a bow’ and you are supposed to put your arm under their bum to keep it up while the front goes down….well we BOTH decided we were really uncomfortable with his ‘boy parts’ on my arm” LOL
