I’m having some trouble with my little Princess, Olivia. I don’t have much experience with a female unspayed rabbit. Olivia’s cage stinks way more than the boys. Is it normal for her to smell worse as she is unspayed? When I get up in the morning the rabbit room is really stinky, musky smelling and it never was with just the boys. I love rabbits but don’t want my house to smell like them!!! I change her litter box once, sometimes twice, a day. Anyone have any tips on making the room smell a bit better (preferably something natural)???

Also I’m having some potty issues with her. In her cage she poops in the litter box about 3/4 of the time but the rest is on the floor. Also sometimes she pees outside the box.

When she was at Mom’s and allowed to binky outside the cage she never pooped once on Mom’s floor but while running at my house she poops everywhere! Do you think this is because she is unspayed and she smells my boys and is therefore staking her claim?? What can I do?

Sorry for all the Q’s. I’m just trying to adjust to life with my little gal (who is becoming very sweet and trusting by the way )

ps. She will be fixed asap when funds allow (after my bf is done school).

She’s probably pooping all over because of the boys, I’d say. Are her poos good? If they are mushy at all (if her stomachs off a bit) then that’ll cause her to stink. She might also be marking a lot? I think she’ll smell less when spayed but you might try that bi-odor stuff for a bit. It really works!!

Jessie’s potty habits greatly improved once she was spayed.  B/f spay, her pee did have a different smell…a/f spay her “waste” was less stinky.  Now w/ my unneutered bun, Leo his stink is KILLING me!  His pee really stinks!  He’s also started to overshoot in the litterbox.  I can’t wait to try to get him neutered again.  Also, you may want to make some litterbox adjustments.  I line w/ newspaper, cover w/ Aspen, and then cover more w/ Carefresh, that has cut back on the stench.

When I had an unspayed female foster bunny, her poos really smelled, kind of a musky/skunky smell.  I was told that this was marking smell from an unfixed bun, and it did get much less after she was spayed.  She also had a litter at the time, which made her even more territorial.

What kind of litter are you using? I use recycled kitty litter (non toxic and Fred doesn’t eat it) on the bottom of the litter tray and hay on top. Seems to keep odours under control. I agree that a spayed female smells less. Also, the extra poop around the place would be because she can sense the males about and is exerting her dominance. May just have to put up withthat till you can get her done.

Unfortunately, you do have a challenging situation. An unspayed female around males. Even if they are separated, she will be able to smell them, and she is letting them know she is around, and she is also letting any other potential females (even though there are none) that she is the queen there, and honestly, I am not sure what you can do about this situation except for somehow being able to completely separate them so that they don’t even venture in nearby areas. However, EVEN if the boys were gone, IF she is a very dominant female, she may mark what she considers her territory. Which could also explain the reason why she didn’t mark at your mothers.

Are you just having to wait to spay her at this point?

As far as sprays go, I don’t know if you have organic natural health stores near you, but there are some here that sell sprays that environmentally friendly, health conscious and pet friendly.

You can also try and mix some essential oils with water put in a spray bottle. just be sure to put it on mist so it doesn’t fall to the ground like rain and dampen the floor with oils and water.

What I usually do is spray the walls and door, but stay away from the center of the room. You can also tie sachet to the doornobs. If you want to go the natural route, you can put rosemary, orange peels, lavender or whatever in the sachet, just be sure that it’s up and away from the bunnies.

Rosemary is very strong and you can even just rub that directly onto things and it will keep the scent for awhile.

Just my little 2 cents, which isn’t much probably.

Not sure what your using for litter, but I really like the woodpellets from the hardware store.   Now granted both my buns are fixed, but just recently!

Before I used Yesterdays News, I read that youvcould use woodstove pellets so I bought a bag, tried them and love them!!  I think if you could get your buns fixed you would find a huge difference in the smell and the random pooping!

Thanks for all the input guys. It’s good to know she will probably be less stinky after the spay. Some days it’s not so bad but some days, pee yu!!!

I’m using Yesterday’s News for litter.

yup… baby being an unspayed senior gal leaves smelly bb’s when she’s dropping them to mark territory.  it’s the same skunky musky smell you get when cleaning out the anal glands.  and the bb’s look more damp if you see them freshly dropped.  she may slowly reduce this after she has settled in & gotten more used to the other bun smells but it won’t dissappear until you have her spayed.

with baby bun i’m used to daily cleaning of her ‘puddles’… i have bunny towels that i use to wipe them up with, spot spray with vinegar water, and then rinse with plain water.  i use yesterdays news & change the litters every other day or as needed (some times she uses the living room one more than the bedroom one so it depends) but i’m going to try to find some wood stove pellets to save some $$.

vinegar really neutralizes odors & you could try to set out a bowl / container with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the room some where olivia can’t get into it or spill it.  vinegar isn’t good for them to eat or stand in but i do not think the smell is bad for them.  also, the vinegar smell will not last long at all but if you really hate the smell you could add a drop of eucalyptis essential oil to it for a non-chemically fresh clean smell.
