I am still searching for my own bunny. The two that I was considering didn’t work out for different reasons, and I haven’t come across any other since then. I really, really want to adopt a bunny, but since I am 21 years old, a college student, currently living at home with plans to rent an apartment in the fall, I don’t fit their adoption requirements. I have been checking craigslist’s a lot thinking I might find a bunny there that needs a new home. This little one just showed up today, and I contacted the owner to get some more details. Do you guys really think she is a dwarf? I know she may be a he, but I am curious as to whether or not she will stay a small/medium sized bunny since I was originally looking for a Holland Lop or Netherland Dwarf. I posted the link below. Thanks!

She is adorable.  No idea if she is a dwarf tho, so i probably shouldn’t be replying to this thread.

Could your parents help you with adoption?  Shelters would probably not have a huge problem if they knew your parents were behind you, and they adopted the bun under their name.

You should go meet her!  It could be love at first sight!

I’m also a college student, in STUDIO apartment, 2 of us plus bun, and it works.  But my parents never would have backed me up… It was my fiance that bought him for me (we knew nothing about rabbits, next time we will definitely adopt), and we are bunny people for life now.

          Good luck!

She is CUTE! I’m no expert but have done A LOT of research on different breeds. I think she looks like a dwarf. I’ve noticed in a lot of dwarfs thier ears are really short. Hers are. It’s hard to tell though. There are so many mixed breeds out there. Look at my bun! In my avatar he was only 2 months. His ears are HUGE! lol. Like I said, I am no expert but I have noticed that’s one of the characteristics of a dwarf. Even if it isn’t, she shouldn’t get big. Maybe 4 or 5 lbs. She is definelty not a large breed. From what I can see. That’s my opinion though. If I were you, I would love to have her She looks sweet. Not to mention, you get her for $20, the cage for $20 AND the play pen for $20! $60! That’s a great price for those items. Cages are expensive (for $20 it probably won’t be a huge cage) but still! I just bought a playpen for $40. You are getting for 1/2 that price. I know it’s not all about the money but keep in mind, bunnies are cheap to buy but not so cheap to take care of! So if you can get an adorable bunny and her stuff for that price, you may have extra money to buy her some toys

Go to this site. These are Netherland dwarfs and they look just like the craigslist bunny!

She does appear to have a dwarf look but then netherland dwarves have an eternal baby look and this rabbit is only 8weeks old so…..It is hard to say either way. Her ears look a bit longer than a N Dwarf. Just looking at her i would guess that she’ll be a mid size bun at around 5lbs. Total guess. I’m a little confused why you didn’t fit the adoption requirements. Is it because you plan to move to an apartment? Many allow rabbits as they are though of as a caged pet.

I can understand the hesitation for rescues to adopt out to a college student who is in transition from their parents home —looking for an apartment. Funds are normally more thin for most college students and apartments that accept pets can limit things too. If you are able to afford, not just the regular care, but the vet care too (as most members can tell you that they have had to see the vet at least once), then that may not be a problem. But it is something to consider. Check out our cost page for details https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/CostofHavingaBunny/tabid/145/Default.aspx

Since she is so young, are you planning on spaying her? That has some definite bigger dollar costs to consider as well.

As far as her breed – she looks like a silver martin breed. http://www.silvermarten.com/breed.html I don’t know much personally about the breed, but if I were to generalize, I have heard they can be spirited. However, I have met PLENTY of bunnies that completely negate any generality.

I don’t mean to be a debbie downer regarding inviting a new bunny into your life, I just want to make sure that  full preparation has been established since not being fully prepared is one of the main reasons that rabbits end up shelters.

So if you are fully financially prepared, know what to expect and are ready for the time and $$ responsibility, then I am happy for you, but if you need more time to think and reconsider, then we are here to help with that too.

I would also recommend you wait until you’re officially out on your own and can show proof that the apartment you’re in accepts pets. When looking for a place, make sure to mention you might be getting a pet later on in the future and see how they respond. Or don’t mention it… once you’re already in the place, they’ll be more likely to allow it b/c it’s easier than having to find a new tenant.

Spays and neuters are big bucks, so I would call local vets BEFORE committing to an unaltered bunny to make sure you’d be able to afford the cost within the next month or two. Since most rescues spay/neuter prior to adoption, that is a big incentive to go thru a rescue, that and the fact you get to help save TWO bunnies!

Well, the owner of that bunny never emailed me back.

The house rabbit rescue will not allow me to adopt from them, because they do not adopt to college students who are renting before graduation. The problem is, I am three years into college, I will technically be a senior next year, but I recently changed my major so I have another two year for my associate’s degree and three-three and half for my bachelor’s. I have lived on my own before, but I moved back home this year since my major change required me to switch schools.

I have done a ton of research on bunnies, and I am aware of their care and expenses. I have been a huge animal person all of my life. I rode horses when I was younger, showed dogs in AKC shows, shadowed at a vet’s office, volunteered at animal control, worked at a show kennel, etc. I currently have three of my own pets and understand that a pet is a lifelong commitment, and they are expensive to keep. My parents do not care whether or not I get another animal as the animals I have always been my own and fully my responsible. However, they are not going to support me in any way with getting a rabbit. That is fully up to me.

But, maybe you guys are right, and I should just wait. I feel like I have done a lot of searching for one without much luck, and I am a person that believes in signs. So maybe I am not meant to have one, at least right now. Thanks for all the advice though!

So often this is what happens too, a bunny “falls through”, but when it’s right and meant to happen, it will. We all go into it with the best intentions, but who knows where we may find our next bunny. It’s usually when you “stop looking” that the perfect bunny/situation comes along.
