Usually, Stella and Luna both come running when they see me with veggie dinner, but last night Stella just sat in her cage.  She came out and looked like she wanted to eat, but didn’t and went back and sat in the corner of her cage. She wasn’t grinding her teeth or anything like that.  I immediately went into high alert and tried to coax her with a sprig of parsley, but no luck.  These rabbits are ALWAYS hungry, so I knew something was up.  I decided that I would take her to the vet this morning if she still wasn’t eating.  Well, when I went in to give them their morning pellets, she was running around and eating just fine.  I wonder what was wrong?  I gave her some petromalt this morning just to be on the safe side and she gobbled it up.  Any ideas?  I’ll keep a watchful eye on her over the next few days.

I just went through this with my bunny DJ.  On Friday night he refused to eat, and was doing the half sit/half flop thing that says “My tummy hurts”.  I went into bunny-dad overdrive, first giving him simethicone, then metacam and finally assist feeding critical care and water.  About an hour after giving him the critical care, he was laying on my chest and I offered him a piece of hay on a whim.  He gobbled it up, and then spent the next hour eating everything in sight – hay, greens, pellets, treats anything he could find.  We have had some hot weather here over the last few weeks, and DJ and Curly Sue are both shedding like crazy, and they have the string-of-pearls poops that show they are swallowing lots of fur.  Are your bunnies shedding?  It seemed like DJ had something blocking his intestines (probably fur), and the critical care got him moving again.  He is fine now.

Yes, Osprey, they both are shedding like crazy! I brush and brush and still lots of fur. I also noticed that they have both been grooming each other. I guess that’s what the problem was.

…oh no…I have heard you can give papaya tablets, and fresh pineapple juice [not sure about the dosis, tho…]

to prevent “hairballs”.  if  your guys are grooming each other, they surely swallow lots of fur. that’s not good.

Isn’t there a laxative for bunnies???

You can give them Petromalt and I think there’s another brand called Laxatone(?). It’s a hairball remedy for cats and can be given to rabbits. Some owners don’t feel it’s necessary, but I do use it occasionally. Stella wouldn’t take any yesterday, but she gobbled some up off my finger this morning!

I think all of our rabbits are chatting in the BB chat room. Daffodil did the same thing to me last night. Hmm, I wonder if there is going to be an earthquake or something and our furred friends are picking up on it?

Sometimes my bunnies will do this with their vegetables because they have realized that the veggies come every day, and they are not so impressed by them any more! I think the heat may have something to do with it – try some of the hot weather tips that BinkyBunny posted in the “Cooling Tips” under the “Bunny Info” tab. Also, its great that you noticed so quickly that something was not right with one of your bunnies – good job on the good eye

Something weird is definintely going on! When I got home tonight, Luna was acting the same way that Stella was yesterday. I’m still on red alert as we speak! She wouldn’t eat, just sitting in the x-pen. I managed to rub some petromalt on her paw which hopefully she’ll eat. Stella is back to her old self. I’m going in to check on her now.
