Well it got pretty hot this weekend. To keep Buster cool on our 4th floor apt., i had a fan blowing on her and also put a frozen water bottle. She ended up sitting right next to it by her belly/side…was glad she liked it and it worked!

What do you guys do to keep your bun cool?

We keep a frozen water bottle around – sometimes they lay next to it and sometimes they ignore it. My biggest weapon is the air conditioning. We definitely had it on yesterday when it hit 83.

Otto always tries to bit through his frozen Gatorade bottle but hasn’t come close yet. It’s hard for them to get a good tooth hold on a round bottle 😛

If you use water bottles, you can also try freezing a couple inches in the bottom, and then filling the rest up with water. It takes awhile for the ice to melt, so the water stays cool for awhile.

You can see all the things that worked for my bunnies as wells as for a few other members in our Cooling Tips section

I also have a new tip that I have yet to add to that section.  I found that if you wrap water bottles (large or small) in a towel, they stay cool longer, and as the bottle sweats or if it leaks, the towel comes in handy, and it also prevents your bunny from chewing on the bottle, however, if your bunny likes to chew on towels and blankets…well, then this may not work for you.

I get the extra large bottles and make little bed sides out of them.  i also paired that up with large ceramic tile squares that stay cool  (if you have hard wood floors, put something soft underneath the tile otherwise you can scratch the floor over time

So here are a few pics.  Jack goes back and forth between the tile and the cool bed (though he prefers hanging on tile) while Vivian sticks to the “cool” beds only.  In the last pic, Jack chose to stay in his hideybox where there is a frozen water bottle and tile too.

I place the tiles in the freezer overnight, so they are super cold when I put them down. I’ve not had to do this for my bunnies yet, but did fro other pets. I also use glass jars (square pasta ones work great) with a metal lid, b/c they are less chewable like plastic ones.

Oh! Great idea about putting the tiles in the freezer! I’ll add that to the cooling tips section.  When i get tips from members I normally  add  ”member tip by  (Andi)”   Is that okay with you otherwise, I will just say “Member Tip:”.

Edited to add:  Well, I sure am a big dummyhead.  I went to add the tip, and I already had it in there!     I vaguely remember a friend or someone giving me that tip along time ago.  It may have even been my husband.   Good Grief….I need a vacation.

                      So, yeah…anyway…Good Tip!
