Hey, y’all!! A long, long while back, I gave Bolt a salt wheel and he liked it, he licked it all up. But I never gave him another one because we just got him at the time and we were just experimenting on what he’d like and we just kinda forgot about it. Fast forward to this year, I was researching about them and I saw that they weren’t good for rabbits? Can someone back this up or is this false?

Generally rabbits are able to get their salt from pellets and such. They don’t really need the extra salt from salt licks/wheels. It may cause them to drink more water than needed and hence they will pee more, which could potentially overwork the kidneys.

There are many other alternatives that rabbits like, e.g. a willow ball, timothy hay tunnel or mat, timothy hay cubes, apple sticks etc. that are safe for bunnies to chew on.

Yes, I remember reading that. He does eat a lot of pellets and timothy hay, so he is getting plenty of salt. Plus, he’s a bit on the older side, so his organs aren’t like they used to be, so I shouldn’t giving him anymore sodium that he doesn’t need. Thank you so much!!
