        Hi all!

I have a 6 year old male neutered lionhead rabbit named Mickey. He has experienced a few bouts of stasis in the past, but it’s been a long time since he has had one. His diet is free choice Timothy hay and 1/4 cup Oxbow Adult rabbit pellets per day. He is free roam in a large spare bedroom. No recent changes to his diet or environment.

Last night, he didn’t eat his banana, which is very unusual for him. He pooped normally yesterday morning, but didn’t poop at all overnight, which is also very unlike him. Usually his litter box is full of poop every morning, which means that he went for at least 12 hours without pooping. Today, he’s been acting fine and doesn’t seem lethargic at all. He’s still not eating treats or fruit, but he’s eaten quite a bit of his Timothy hay. He pooped at 1:00 PM and it was about 20 small, hard, misshapen poops, but they were there! He pooped out another 10-15 very small hard poops at about 2:00 pm. Since then, he’s continued to act okay and eat hay but still no poop. He is VERY hard to get critical care into, so I’ve just continued to hand feed him hay. I couldn’t get him to a vet today due to the weather and icy roads. Usually when he does this, he eventually works it out and starts pooping normally again and I assume that he just gets “backed up” for some reason.

I’m worried that it’s been so long but I am also trying not to freak out since he did pass poop today, it just wasn’t normal. If he still hasn’t pooped by tomorrow I’ll be bringing him to the vet once the ice melts off the roads. My question is, how would I know if this were just regular stasis vs something more serious? I’ve heard so many horror stories of bunnies that seem to have stasis but end up having an obstruction or liver lobe torsion. His belly is soft and doesn’t feel firm, and he seems pretty bright and he’s acting like his usual self. Thanks in advance!

If he’s pooping then there isn’t an obstruction. At least not a full one. Small, misshapen poops are a sign that things have slowed down. But he is eating something and he is pooping, so that is a good sign. Not great, but not full on panic mode either. Have you tried giving him gas drops (simethicone)? Or any other supportive care?
