Honey has in the past few days started to make a funny noise when I try and get her out of her hutch and even if she is being pat sometimes. Its not only when I’m touching her either, so it can’t be a pain thing.

Its a bit like, ummm how can I type it – eeeee eeee kinda? LOL

Anyway, do you think it could be fear? Or anger? Do you think its normal?

I am going to the vet tomorrow to get a good check over on her done but was just wondering your advice?

        Thanks.

Bunnies usually make that sound when they feel threatened or are frightened. When you go in her hutch is it only to grab her? Bunnies really need to have a human touch-free zone to feel safe and cozy. Does she grind her teeth at all?

It certainly isn’t a loud noise, just a little e e e e sound. No I put food in her hutch etc, not always to grab her and she didn’t do it before, only the past week or so I would say.

Grind teeth, ummm I don’t think so, I haven’t noticed anyway?

Bailey makes a little muffled eeeeee noise when she’s stressed.  But recently when we were at the vets(again) she made little loud eee eeee  eeeee.   The vet even joked she was trying to be a Guinea Pig. But she was fine, just stressed out because she has had to be at the vets soo much.    She can also make eeeee noises when she’s eating something yummy.  Check out the audio of Happy Noises at https://binkybunny.com/Photos/tabid/80/Default.aspx Then scroll down to audio.

The fact that she is doing this just recently makes me wonder too if she could be in any pain.  (she could still be in pain even if you are not touching her)  Is she eating and pooping okay?

Could anything have scared her recently that makes her more stressed?

She eats like a pig – another reason why I am taking her to the vet tonight, I think she eats to much and is to fat, but I’m not sure.

Poos are ok, have had a couple little runny ones recently, which is what inspired me to go to the vet, but other then all that she is fine.

I don’t think anything has happened to her, but thats what I thought, its like she doesn’t want to come out of her hutch anymore, but once she is out she isn’t scared anymore?

Frankie’s nose whistles sometimes… maybe it could be what you’re hearing? It sounds silly, but it’s possible.

My bunny Nilla Bean always makes the same noise when I put my hand in her cage, or when I put my hand over her head at first to start petting her. Its kind of like her warning to me that she is displeased with my sudden intrusion I think its the sudden motion that startles them, and then also just a slight protest to you being “in their territory.” With Nilla Bean we’ve never had any problem with this, its just her general instinct being a prey bunny to protest quick actions, and people in her “house.” She still enjoys being pet, and coming out and running around, I think its just kind of a warning, like HEY don’t PICK ME UP!

I was checking that audio clip today (it reminded me of a monkey) well connor was on the floor next to me and he went nuts!! He could hear it over the speakers, and started sniffing wildly and doing his bob, he even started to make sniffing noises.

A grunt is usually a sign of aggression.  "You there!  Stop what you’re doing this instant."

A squeal usually indicates fear, so you’re probably doing something to scare your bun.  It’s best to keep your hands out of the rabbit’s house.  i mean you’d react the same way if a huge gigantic hand reached into your house and started pulling you out.

It’s better just to open the door and wait for the bunny to come out.  You sayd "Hutch" so if it’s an outdoor home so letting the rabbit out might be a bad idea.  Consider moving inside.  Rabbits are much healthier and happier in a climate controlled and weather protected environment.

She is in a hutch on an enclosed balcony. She is weather protected and very happy there. I am unable to bring her inside permanently but she comes inside with me each night when I’m home and any other time I’m there.

I can’t just leave the door open for her, we have 2 large GSD dogs and I would never risk her life with them. I am making her hutch even larger this weekend, currently she only has one level but I will be giving her 2 for more space.

I think the sound might be fear as I just heard it again tonight when I got her out. It is strange that she started the noise now when she had never ever had a problem with picking her up any other time.

I don’t have the ability to just let her come out when she pleases unfortunatly so what does everyone suggest? Leave her in there? Just keep getting her out and she will get used to it?

Note: once she is out she is perfectly fine with no worries at all and happy jumping and binking around the house.

Alibear, can you make a ramp for her from the door down to the floor? I totally understand your concern with your dogs too, that is very considerate and thoughtful of you. I think it is kind of odd that she just started this when she was not doing it before. Hmmm. Since it seems that reaching in cannot be avoided try when you open the door to get her out to tempt her there with a treat, pet her gently then pick her up. When you reach for her, try approaching from the side and with the backside of your hand towards her. With some animals, they take much better to the backside of your hand appraching them because it is not a “grabbing” motion and they know, hey, that means I’ll get pet and I like that! Remember that bunnies are pretty much blind up close and to her you are just a big blur so speaking to her will help settle her as well. I hope this helps!

You could try employing a carrier.  Open the door and put your carrier directly agains the door and let the bunny come into the carrier on its own.  It lets your rabbit choose when to come out without leaving it out in the open, where it might be in danger.
