I posted in the Health Q&A forum about Spooky’s eyes the other week. I was concerend about them, so I took him to the vet to have him checked out. Like I said in the other post topic– the vet just told me he has really cool eyes! haha! They just suddenly changed overnight– or maybe not that quick but I didn’t notice them until they were this bright.

Also he has some allergies right now– so thats why he has a little discharge. I cleaned it up after this photo, but I couldn’t get another good one, haha.

They are cool ! I wonder if they’ll keep getting more blue? He does have some markings that indicate he carrys the vienna gene…so I’m learning.
Blue eyes and dutch like markings like the little white blaze & paws he has point to this.

I think Monkeybun said her dutch bun Moose has some layering of brown and blue eyes. Very cool buns.

Yep, thats what Moose’s eyes are like. A bit of brown a bit of blue. Guess that means he has the vienna gene too

My grandfather and father have that. What’s the vienna gene? (We don’t hail from near there.)

It’s the gene that produces Blue Eye White colouring.
There was a whole thread that went into it but I don’t recall where. I think Markbun mentioned it and Petzy and Elrohwen got talking genetics. :p

I’ll repost here what lashkay posted about it in Petie’s intro thread.

Thanks. I found these definitions on the internet:

VM: Vienna-Marked (carries the BEW gene and it is revealed through white markings; also called Sport, Miss-marked, Dutch-marked)

VC: Vienna-Carrier (carries the BEW gene but it is hidden)

FYI, his breeder also had this to say:
he carries the vienna gene. He is a sport. Some show the ‘sport’ marking, some do not.
yes they are called vienna carriers, sports or mismarks. but all being vienna carriers, the gene that makes Blue eyed whites or BEW
Vc would be one not showing the ‘mismark’ VM would be one that would be a marked carrier.

                And here’s Petie

K&K’s Kahlua would be an example of VC  – vienna carrier as her parents were BEW’s. (I think both were…)

Also, I just read this on vienna gene

I prefer to call these “Dutch marked” rabbits, “Vienna marked”, so there will be no confusion in termonology with the Dutch rabbit breed. Some Vienna marked rabbits have all blue eyes. Most have eyes that are part blue (a distinct section of the iris) and part brown, or blue gray (in the case of dilute colors). This variation in eye color, is another similarity with the Dutch rabbit breed.

So maybe this eye thing is not specific to vienna carriers? This always happens when I start reading on colours and genes. I end up with more confusion and questions.
