Right now, Zeus gets free out of cage time when I’m home and awake.  Meaning he’s in his cage for 4 hours during work, and overnight.  He gets plenty of out of cage time, and doesn’t act like he really wants more exercise or anything.. but I think it would be nice if I could perhaps let him have “free roam” of a room when I’m sleeping..

I was thinking of bunny-proofing the bathroom, putting a baby gate up over the open door, and letting him spend the nights in there.  I’d put a litterbox, hay, water, etc, in there for him.  Is this an okay idea?  Is there anything I should be concerned about?  The only concern I have is him chewing on the molding in there, or perhaps chewing on the cabinet below the sink.  But otherwise, there’s really nothing in there for him to destroy. .  And I’m thinking if I have him in there when I’m home, but just sleeping, I’ll wake up if I hear him chewing on the molding/cabinet because my bed is right next to the bathroom door, just a few feet away.

So, what do you guys think?

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Just make sure he has a rug or something to get some traction and get comfy on and he’ll be fine.

The other thing you will have to watch are in regards to what you clean the floor with. I think if you stick with vinegar/water and rinse — or just be sure to very thoroughly rinse – especially in the corners where cleaner residue can build up. Also, if you use any products like hairspray or body spray, bathroom deodorizer and/or disinfectant sprays- stuff that will be bad for his lungs as well as it can float to the floor and leave residue there, you will have to be careful with that. So as long as that is avoided along with all of the other bunny proofing precautions you are taking, then it should be okay.

I’m actually kinda sensitive to scents myself, so I don’t use hairspray (they’re basically all scented), body spray, etc.  On the same vein I don’t use much harsh cleaning agents because they give me horrible headaches.  So I use a lot of vinegar instead already, because I can stand the smell of vinegar better than other chemicals.

Oh. And make sure the toilet seat lid is down, don’t want him jumping into the toilet!

Good Call Monkey — Rucy actually did that one time because she was so used to jumping on top of the toilet seat and checking things out from there, that it was left open and she jumped right in. She was only ever allowed in the bathroom when I was in their getting ready in the mornings, but after that incident, she never even wanted to enter into the bathroom, so I didn’t have to worry much. (though we still kept the door closed when we weren’t in there)

Eh… I’d pass on the bathroom thing at night. He’ll be more comfortable in his own space. If you’re concerned about how much room he has at night, get an xpen to attach to his cage.
