Here are some pics/stories of the horses at our horse shelter!!

These are before/after pics, so they may be upsetting but I’m showing them to show how great the rescue is!! The horses are all happy and healthy now!

Sooo I’ll start with Briggadier…He was found at auction, starving and wounded. He’s a standardbred and used to race. It turned out his cannon bones were smashed and thats likely the reason his career ended…He’s now happy and healthy and retired-a permanent resident since he’ll never recover to the point where he should work-AND because he’s such a dear that we love him too much!!

Here’s River, purchased at auction-starving. Rehabbed completely, and adopted!!

Bob Marley-seized and run through auction-we got him in February and he’s my special little guy now!! We finally got our hands on him this last weekend and he now loves attention. We’re going to finish halter training him, then he’ll go down to the other pasture with the other babies and some seniors to grow up and concentrate on being a horse!

Calypso-we got her from the same place as Bob Marley, seized and run through auction. She is coming along nicely. She is starting to trust people (they bring her treats and give her scratchies) and is filling out.

Palidin-She had to buy him off the owner, as the owner wasn’t feeding him or looking after his wounds, and feet!!

We’re going to auction tomorrow so we’ll be taking in new residents

(You don’t think you could just sneak one past your boyfriend? I’m imagining you putting a pair of Halloween costume bunny ears on a horse… “I’m really sorry, honey! I couldn’t help it, and he’s just one more bunny…his handicap is that he’s HUGE!”)

oh wow they are so cute! do you work with animals full time K&K?

oh my goodness!! look at them without their winter coats! I live in Florida so none of our horses ever get that fuzzy lol… that app and baby buckskin (palomino? mane/tail are DARK) are beautiful, of course the grey and the bay look amazing too now that you got some groceries on them! Beautiful, congrats and well done with them! All my horses have been off track thoroughbreds… its so sad to think people just dump them to die once their “Career” is over. You saved them from a terrible death, thank you!

i have a website on myspace http://www.myspace.com/keepamericashorsesafe that is all about slaughter.. it sickens me what happens to horses, they are by far my first and foremost favorite animal. before my son was born we always had one or two, from the time i was 3! Once our boys get a bit older we intend to get another rescue horse.

horses are very rare here there is hardly any countryside so you would never really meet someone who has one, although alot of farmers have ponys to cut their grass in fields they dont use and they dont even go back to check on them for months at a time its awful.

thats terrible kim!! but depending on the type of grass you have you wouldnt believe how fat some horses can get off grazing alone… grazing is good for horses, its the stall bound horses, backyard/paddock horses with no grass to eat, or those with bad teeth (in my experience) that are most neglected… its really sad how some horses are treated! I cant tell you how many times ive gone to SPCA to help with the horses down here, its so sick and sad how rough some of the horses look when they come in!

Well not really full time..I work full time in a nursing home (in office stuff though) and I volunteer with animals about 15-20 hr a week, at the humane society and Wild Rose Equine Rescue (which is where all these guys are from). I’m doing the volunteer coordinating there, so it’s busy and takes up alot of home time too but it’s great fun!!

I love the picture of the two brown ones (sorry, not much of an equine expert I am afraid).  I looked at it and thought it was photoshopped, with the same horse put in twice.  It took a double take to realize that there are really two different horses there!

Doing horse rescue must be challenging.  We have enough trouble finding foster space for our 6 pound bunnies, I can’t imagine how hard it must be to get space, feed, vet care and grooming for such large animals.

wow 15-20hrs is along time! i usually only manage 2-3hrs but hey every little counts! any plans to make it a future career path? i am still very much undecided about going into vet nursing or sticking with the teaching *sigh* oh well only time will tell i guess!

Well, I finally decided I’m going to do veterinary. I’m applying for next september, and should I not get in-I’m going all the way. So I’ll just register and do an entire year of extra courses and apply again-and again-until I get in. I’ve decided it’s really the only thing I can do with my life!! Helping out at the horse rescue is definitely helping with my squeamishness…I’ve helped drain absesses, watched geldings (neuter) and euthanasias, and cleaned a lot of gross areas on horses. I find that it’s just the way you think about it and you can do it if you want to….so *fingers crossed*

Congratulations on your decision! That’s so great! Both for the animals that you’ll help, and for yourself, that you know what you want to do to have a fulfilling career! I’m sure you’ll do anything you put your mind to…you’re obviously smart and passionate and a positive-thinker! I’m very happy for you! (Lizzy’s busy plotting mayhem, but if she weren’t Diva-Demon-Bunny, she’d say congrats, too!)

LOL^^ Well I understand the diva so she’s forgiven!!

We went to a horse auction last night, as many horses (good horses) go to the meat buyers, and we bought five new horses!! I’m so excited-well I’d be more excited if the auction hadn’t run late, out of town; I got home at 3AM!!! and I work at 8!!! I’m a little sleepy!
