› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › spaz?
today i walked in my room and closed the door and went and closed my window i turn arround cuz i hear this loud scraching noise, i see Lulu running arround her cage like somthing was trying to eat her. she kept running around jumping in and out of her litter box. ( and by doing that she scared mocha who begain running arround two) i didn’t know what she was doing! i could see she was scared so i opened the door and she stayed there, still in her litter box. i picked her up (because she looked more scared then mocha) and held her for about 5 minuts when mocha all of the sudden runs up his ramp (startleing lulu) sat there for maybe for a second, then runs back down and thumps three times! then he just sits there. after lulu was calmed down i set her on the floor and listend to her stomach, there was a gergaling ( if thats how you spell it) sound every few seconds wich was good. i didn’t know what eles to check for so i put her back in her cage. when i set her in there she jumped in her litter box snd thumped twice.
the people who gave her to us said that she spazes out a lot but i hadn’t seen her do it in a long time. what does these spazes mean?
She may just be one of those over cautious rabbits that is sensitive to her surroundings. Some rabbits just seem to be more alert and anything can cause them to react. Usually too when one rabbit reacts they all do too.
could a bad experience cause it?
Yes, but are you sure it was a bad spaz? I mean, they suddenly run around and do binkies and fast turns for exercise, so if stuck in their cage, it seems like they are going nuts, but really they are doing these fast maneuvers. It’s mostly young bunnies. How old is Lulu?
not necessarily mocha. they spook easily because they are flight animals.
“fast maneuvers” is right, haha, yes, I agree with RP. the fast manouvers are what they do in fun to practice for when they really need it.
Forgot to mention: they hear better than we do, so if a dog was nearby and barking when you had the window open, you might not have noticed but they could hear it a street away and be frightened.
lulu is around 7 or 8 months she is unspayed. i am still not sure if it was just a hyper thing or not cuz she looked kinda scared and she was breathing really heavily. before i got lulu, my sister went over there to pet sit ( cuz her best friend is the person we got lulu from) and they had covered a whole in the cage with cardboard. the next day my sister went over there and they had chewed there way through the cardboard and gotten out of the cage. she found Lulu in the grass but her lulus sister got eaten by a fox :'( she had escaped but she had some nasty scars from being in the jaws of the fox. after that they always saw the fox trying to get in the barn ( cuz thats were lulu was) to try to get her ![]()
Oh, that’s awful. And being unspayed is definitely your answer. She is exactly the right age to have it done, and I would urge you to do so asap. She will calm down considerably within a month after the procedure because her hormones, which are the cause of very active changes in behavior at this age, will settle down. Also, more importantly, she will avoid an 80% likelihood of developing cancer as an adult. It will make her feel much, much better, and she will begin to be feel safer in your home with you. If mocha is a boy, you need to keep them completely separated so Lulu doesn’t get pregnant. They will try to be together, and if their cages are too close the bars may not stop them. So a spay is her road to happiness right away.
Sounds like Rupert-if I come in during a time of the day when I am not normally there-he spooks like that-in fact if I don’t announce myself “Hello stinky bum bummers’, come in at a weird time, or gasp-come in wearing snow pants-he freaks out. He doesn’t seem to have recognized me-and I am beginning to see a pattern-he’s sleeping when I come in and scare him-my greeting wakes him up and he knows it’s ‘just the food lady’ but if I plow in and he’s resting he gets scared
So now I announce myself with bag crinkling (food noise) and my greeting ‘helllloooo stinkers!’
And he’s fine ![]()

My three have been hearing the ravens cawing outside our windows early in the a.m.’s lately. It sets them off thumping and I have to get up and turn on the light and calm them down.
lol@K&K…yeah my cats don’t like my ski pants. Definitely strikes an attitude when I wear those. ^_^
But yes, mocha200, your bunny needs to be spayed. She will be so much happier afterwards.
(and she needs to be kept separate from the other anyway, not just to avoid a surprise litter, but because she’ll need somewhere to rest and heal after surgery.)
Sometimes buns just get in weird moods. When I clean cages at the shelter the buns are never nervous as I’m moving around, dragging the vacuum, etc. This week, everytime I would bend over and stand up, about 4 cages worth of buns would freak out and run to the very back of their cages. I still have no idea why! They were just in a weird mood that day.
Otto also gets in these moods and will freak out if I startle him.
Does she have somewhere to hide? Otto will stop freaking out as soon as he runs into his maze and feels safe. Maybe if she has somewhere to run and feel safe she’ll stop the panic.
mocha is neutered and lulus spay is on march 17. so its not that far away. i think she just got freaked out by something. i can’t wait till she is spayed and i can bond them ( a month after). it will be so much easier. no she doesn’t have a place to hide, i didn’t want to put to much stuff in cuz her cage is small. she is on the top floor of the condo and mocha is on the first and second one. if she was just hyper i could understand why she barely gets any time out of her cage cuz the only place i can put her to play is in my room in an xpen and i can barely move in my room. ( cuz my room is really small) i will have to find a better setup. but it is almost spring so once it stops raining i can let them run around on the deck.
I think giving her a box or something to hide in would help a lot. She’s probably panicking because she can’t get away from whatever is scaring her.
oh ok. well the snow is all completely gone today except for the snow in the woods. but they get to start playing outside now! only on the deck, until we build them an outdoor play area.
It’s great you’re able to get her spayed very soon! You’ve done such a wonderful job with getting them inside the house and having Mocha neutered!
