Hi everyone, we would like to know if it is advisable to allow a female rabbit to have one litter of kittens before being spayed or not. Any thoughts or advice welcome, thanks in advance

It is not really recommended to let them have babies for a number of reasons (some ethical, some health)

This forum actually  really doesn’t support the breeding of rabbits (or the discussion of intentional breeding)

Rabbits often make really bad first time mothers. There are a lot of heartbreaking stories of kits not making it being abandoned etc. by first time mothers who arent sure what they are doing, or are just really overwhelmed by the experience.

Breeding should be left to the breeders with good certified healthy animals with a good standard of care and a wealth of knowledge. You dont know what genetics and defects you could be passing on otherwise (as someone who owns backyard breeder rescues I can tell you healthy parents can make really sickly babies)

There are also already too many rabbits in need of homes, so ethically, it would be wrong to put more babies into an already flooded market.

Having babies in no way will benefit your girl, it wont make her “more settled” as some myth say about breeding females. On the contrary there are a lot more negative health issues you could run into while attempting to breed.

I would neuter her without hesitation if I were you, and then when she is healed and her hormones have settled look into adopting her a companion if you are looking for additional buns to add to your life !

            Dface,

Thank you for replying. We won’t allow her to have babies and will have her neutered. We just wanted to be sure as it’s an irreversible operation.
