the soonest appointment available is Dec 21st.  but I dont know if I should take it because it’s so close to christmas that I would not be able to get a hold of their vet very easily should they say, pull out their stitches or stop eating or something  what are the chances of something like that happening?  or would it be better to wait until Jan/Feb, so their vet would be more easiliy available? it be be 2 rabbits at the same time, not just one to worry about lol

It is unlikely that there would be complications, but as with anything there is always a risk. If you are going to be very worried I can’t see a problem with having them done after new year.

its actually my mom thats worried, exotic vets around here are slim pickings, there is only 3..not clinics, total vets that have ever seen an exotic, so if we couldnt get a hold of our vet, we would basicly be screwed. I thought it was fine, that complications were unlikley beyond the first day, 3 days later should be fine should it not? I have only had one rabbit previously and she wasnt fixed, she was put under once to remove an abcess, but thats it, I honestly have no idea if I SHOULD be worried about it being so close to christmas lol

Both my girls had no problems after their spays. Just keep a close eye on her. I slept on the floor with my girls after each of them had it done so I could wake up and check on them frequently

lol, well my mom had to go to the girls vet today anyway to get wormer for the dogs(they were the only clinic that had it, I only use them for my exotics), I was babysitting, so my mom booked the appointment today. drop off between 7:30 and 8 on Dec. 21st and bring their food. my mom said there was a breif confusion, the front desk lady asked the vet if there was any special instructions for rabbits, and the vet said no..meaning no there are no instructions..but the desk lady thought that meant “normal” instructions of no food/water..she started to say that and the vet ran out “NONONONONO, I meant no instructions, feed and water as normal!” lol

I would postpone till after the holidays. Spays can be very hard on the rabbits. I know of many cases where a healthy female rabbit would not resume eating in time and needed special care. It is only once in the rabbit’s lifetime and just not woth the risk.

rabbits cannot fast for a spay or neuter.
my bunny was alright when she got home. she wanted to jump all over things but i didn’t let her. she ripped out her stitches, but she didn’t bleed. she recovered quite fine.

if you are worried about her ripping the stitches, your vet may glue the incision closed and do stitches. that is what mine did.

What is your vet’s scheduled days/hours for the holidays? You also need to keep in mind that Christmas is on a Saturday this year, this is when almost all vets are closed ANYWAYS. So unless they are closing for an extended length of time, I think it should be okay. If they are just closed for a half day on the 24th, and then the 25th, and 26th, there is really no difference between this and normal weekend hours. It would be just like any other Tuesday morning spay surgery. Where would the vet refer you in case of an emergency over the holiday?

I know Brittany, that why the vet ran out when the front staff started to say that, not only are they not fasting, but I am supposed to bring their food.

thats what I figered beka, in event on an emergancy outside of hours, reqguardless of holiday or not, we wuld be sent to the 24 hour clinic, they are super high tech, 24 hour facility wth one of the citys 3 exotics vets, then when the girls regular vet was in, care would transfer back to her.

Make sure you are given pain meds for Jenny at the time of surgery. Peepers will probably not need them, but she definitely will.

Bumblebee did great after her spay….the next day she was harder than heck to get those liquid meds in her mouth. She kicked the crud out of me. I was able to give them to her for 5 days before I couldn’t take it anymore, she totally knew what I was up to and when she saw me pick up the bottle it was ZOOM!!! under the bed she goes!

I have a special bunny bag that I pack full of veggies, hay, pellets and a few treats to help encourage eatting again. Also it’s a good idea to offer both a water bottle and a crock, getting extra water on the veggies when you feed them, and keeping her litterbox really clean!

****wait wait wait…Peepers won’t need take home meds??….ur saying Peepers is INDEED A BOY!?!??!!? I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!****

I might have been wrong Lintini.  I don’t actually remember if Peepers is a boy or girl.  I think I assumed boy because of the name.  If Peepers is a girl, SHE would need pain meds too, of course.
