Hi all! I am having some trouble with my bunny’s incision. She just got spayed about a week and a half ago and have been keeping a look out on her stitches to make sure she doesn’t get into them and for the longest time, she didn’t seem to be interested in them, until two days ago. I’ve noticed the incision area to appear a slightly open, but dry. The stitches are gone, not sure if they were dissolved or if she had gotten into them, but she is now starting to lick the area, and I am worried it will get infected. What can I do to prevent it(cone does not work at ALL) and should I take her to the vet even if it seems dry? Like perhaps it just healed bad, because she might’ve messed with the stitches so thoughts? All comments are greatly appreciated!

If she’s messing with the incision site, it’s probably worth taking her back to the vet. An over interest in the incision can also be a sign of pain. I’m not really sure what slightly open but dry means though… Could you post a photo?

I guess, you’re right. I would like to hope that because its not bleeding out or filled with pus, it’s just not healing right, but atleast its healing. I just want to avoid taking her back to the vet if she can heal on her own, because this would only elongate the healing process even more and the cone is a no go for her. I am not sure if its a little open because she messed with the stitches while it was healing so it just healed bad or what. What do you think?

That doesn’t look like my bunny’s spay site ever looked. I don’t have a huge amount of experience, but I would take her back to the vet. She might need some extra stitches, or glue just to seal it up. It also looks like it could be causing her pain, so she might need more painkillers. I imagine she’s more likely to fuss with the edges of a wound that looks like that, than a sealed one.

Some vets will give you a baby onesie type thing to put over bunnies spays and neuters, so if she really hates the cone, that could be an option.

I agree that she should go back to the vet. That looks like an open wound and based on how it’s scabbed from the picture, it’s not going to close up neatly as it should, and as it is now, it can be more susceptible for infection and more complications.

                Sending her good healing vibes!

That’s what I thought, and man that onesie idea sounds great. I’ll definitely have to look into that, thanks!

I totally figured that was the case, I just wanted to make sure with others with some kind of experience before I wasted a trip to the vet. I’ll definitely give them a call then to see what can be done in regards to it. Thanks so much for the advice!
