Hi i have a concern for my one year old holland lop. She is now 2.4lb.

So at 8-9 months of age, before she reached 2lb, we took her to the vet to get her spayed. The vet took her in and she opened her up in the surgery, just to find out that her ovaries were not fully developed!!.. so she was closed and she could not be spayed. She and my family had to go through that traumatic experience of her recovering from that.

Now she is just over a year old. She is now 2.4 lb. Much bigger than she was before back then but still very small. I am afraid to take her to get her spayed now. Do you guys think i should wait a little longer until she weighs more like 3lb? I dont want to risk another surgery without getting spayed.

I am curious to see what another vet says, if it’s possible to get a second opinion. It doesn’t really make sense to me that they wouldn’t be able to remove ovaries only because they’re “underdeveloped” – it sounds like she might not have developed fully as a baby, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be able to be spayed. Organs are organs. And I wonder why they wouldn’t be able to remove them even still? There might be some complication with her actual structure, but that seems odd to me. But maybe someone else can weigh in here.

@bastion It’s possible her ovaries were so small the first time that they couldn’t see them to remove them properly? I agree it’s odd but that’s my guess.

@Somi, I think she is probably OK now. For her breed, she is done growing and would mostly be “filling out”, as opposed to growing her skeleton and organs.

I do agree that it might be worth getting a second opinion if you have any doubts about your vet.
