My bunny coconut got spayed on Friday August 3rd around 2pm and was discharged at 7pm. The vet technician went over all the medicine info and after care . They sent me home with the medicine and a paper that went over some instructions & some things to look out for. They told me she should be back to normal and eating. The were very clear that she couldn’t lick or scratch her stitches ….however she didn’t eat at all because I stayed up all night watching her to make sure she wasn’t licking or scratching her stitches. Today I tried to give her veggies, fruit , pallets and hay and she still wasn’t eating . She would only drink water and peed a couple times but no poop yet. I had to force feed her critical care and then shortly after she starting eating some hay, veggies & fruit. I need some advice…I’m so paranoid of going to sleep and not staying up and waking up to her pulling off her stitches! I have barely slept 5 hours in 2 days and I can’t keep this up anymore …if anyone can give me some advice on what to do. The vet didn’t sent me home with a cone since she said bunnies don’t always lick the area if it got bad that they could give me one.

          Hi,
My girls are never themselves for up to 48 hours, I know scary right.
When they got spayed one picked at her staples and ripped them out and my other litterally bit her skin off around it. I was told to put some silver cream they sell on it and it help numb it and makes it heal faster. I know I’m sorry this didn’t help. You staying up with her, that might make her agitated and want to pick at them. You can set alarms for every 3-4 hours and check on her if it helps you. I know this isn’t recommended but if you have to(only if she bites it) put a huge bandaid on it but you will need to replace it all the time so it doesn’t get infected and and rip sutures out, make sure she doesn’t eat it but that’s only if she’s picking at it.

She seems like she is doing good and not interested in it so try not to stress yourself and her out. It will be more itchy when it starts to heal. Just make sure you keep her on the pain meds and on Monday if she is picking at it, call them and they might use superglue to close it so she can’t do anything to it.

i understand how you feel! my bun just got spayed last week and the first two nights i had her, i barely slept. to try stop her from licking it is getting a tea towel or some sort of fabric and wrap it around her torso(make it so that you can fit two or three fingers. any tighter and she might chew it). i don’t mean a burrito wrap, think of it as a stomach warmer or realllllly loose corset. then, get a ribbon or to tie it and make sure the bow is on her back and not her tummy. this didn’t help for me since my rabbit hates being confined but i know this method worked for most rabbits. to try get her to eat, have you tried mashing some banana and mixing it with the critical care ? its not good for rabbits to have a lot of banana but giving her a little more than she’s supposed to (i don’t mean three days worth of banana!! just one and a half days worth of banana per day is fine) isn’t going to make her sick. its good to have her eat than not eat at all! the first two days is hard as bunnyhouse said since they aren’t themselves. if she starts to eat some vegetables but wont willingly eat her critical care, cut up her vegetables and make them really small and mix it with her critical care. this helped my bun eat her critical care without adding so much stress from force feeding. also, not sure if your bun will like it but maybe even just stay in her pen area and stay near her and sleep. even though a lot of bunnies wont want to be forced to do something, they will probably like the company and support. lay down some blankets for her to sleep on if she likes it. also, clean her litterbox as much as possible. i do it whenever she pees so she doesn’t have to sit in damp places. if you live in cities or loud places, put some calming music to try calm her down if you want but do be aware that this might not work for her. turn on heaters if its a bit cold and make the room warmer than room temperature. she’s probably feeling a bit cold since her stomach is shaved and cause she just got out of surgery.
