My lions head I’ve noticed has these almost like blisters around his front nail beds, almost like they are swollen are some of them are really red. I feel awful I cryed when I saw them I think I let his nails get longer then I was susposed to, I was having a hard time cutting them with the clippers I had he has really thick nails I had to get some largers ones I think I might have let it go too long, but I feel so bad. On top of all that they are black nails all of then so awful to cut, I might have gotten a white bunny had I thought about it ahead of time. They are definatly sore, but I dont understand how he could get sore hocks because he has really thick fur on his feet. He has been laying down more then usual but he’s always been kinda lazy but now I don’t know.

I tried to take photos of my rabbits’ paws; but without assistant, that’s kind of hard. Only one of mine will trance safely to the point of just resting on her back.

I will attach my two photos anyways in case they help. When I part my rabbits’ fur right on the underside at the skin behind the nails, I can see a pink spot. All my rabbits have it but it’s really hard to see except on my mini rexes.

I don’t know if your rabbit has blisters or is losing fur on the bottom of his paws but I find rabbits have pink pads under all that fur.

OK, that’s the wrong photo… Deirdra is just showing her cooperation or something.

I had to use water to slick the fur apart on Deirdra’s paw.

Lint is mini rex. The first time I clipped his nails I found these pink spots and went to two different vets. They told me it was a rex thing, but then I discovered if you part the fur of any rabbit really hard in that spot there is this pink pad. When I say “any rabbit” I mean any I checked, 13 in total. Out of 13 everybun had it. On my angora mix you’d never think they are there, but it takes two people to find them.LOL.

–where does your bunny have those swollen pink spots? On top or at the bottom?

Why don’t you take him to your vet for a nail trimming appointment?
Usually they only cost at most about $15 (I used to pay 8 but that was a while ago). You can ask the vet to plan to give you a lesson in trimming nails yourself, so you and bunny are both comfortable with it. While she shows you, ask her what is normal and what isn’t as she examines the pink pads.

That gadget that they sell for trimming nails, “Pedipaws”, can that be used for rabbits?

That doesn’t sound like sore hocks to me. Sore hocks are mostly on the back end of the foot and not usually on the front paws. I would take RabbitPam’s advice. Get your vet to trim them nice and short and you can get on a rotation to trim often so you don’t have to take much off his nails. I do my rabbits nails about once a month, the back feet sometimes a bit more often.

I have a Perfect Paw trimmer (similar to the PediPaw). I don’t like it though for rabbits. It takes too long to get a tiny amount filed down. My rabbits hate the noise and the vibration on their feet. Maybe it would be okay for a real patient bunny.

My Dad bought me a PediPaws when I got Sammy but she was so small and skittish that I have yet to try it. You have to work with them for several days conditioning them to the noise by giving treats as you get them used to it. Eventually it may be worth using on an adult bunny, but in the meantime you want to master the toe nail clippers (a tiny scissors made for cats works just fine) and possibly learn to make a bunny burrito.
                      See what the vet uses.
