Hey guys, new here nice to meet you!

I got a lionhead baby just before Christmas .. his name is chilli. Until about 3 days ago he was totally fine but then he suddenly got red skin around his eyes.
no weeping, no gunk, no crust ..
eating and drinking normally and binkying and zooming around like a mad man still so doesn’t seem to be bothering him.

I am booked into the vets tomorrow but they said on the phone to me ‘they might not know as they’re not exotic vets’ and the only exotic vet near me charges £60 consultation fee and has no appointment for nearly 2 weeks!! So i thought I’d see if anyone has had this issue before or any ideas what to try.

ive bathed them with cold tea, plain boiled cooked water and even tried pets at home rabbit eye gel (vitamin a cream stuff) but none of those have helped.

One day when I came home he did have hair in his eyes so I shaved his cheeks a little,

im wondering if he’s maybe allergic to something? His bedding is bath mats and fleece and litter tray is carefresh with hay ontop. I was thinking of trying piriton syrup if it’s an allergy maybe?

It doesn’t look too bad to me. Is the area you’re concerned about on the lower edge of the lid? I would hold off on doing any gels or creams, but you can rinse the eye with saline solution. He could have scratched it or gotten some hay dust in it.

I’m not familiar with piriton but I wouldn’t give any medicine until you have the exotics vet look at it. I think with how it is, it would be OK to just monitor it. If it gets better you could cancel, but if it gets worse you could maybe push them a bit to get you in sooner. They may be able to see him sooner if you drop him off, rather than a normal appointment.

It doesn’t look that bad. I agree, it could have just been some irritation.

If it may be something irritating the eye, you can try flushing the eye with a sterile saline solution (like the kind marketed for contact lenses). If that doesn’t help, then I recommend a vet visit. Aside from random foreign objects like hay/fur, other (more serious) things can cause eye irritation, so it’s important to get assessment if you do not see improvements: http://bunny.tips/Conjunctivitis

If it was me, I would be making an appointment with the exotics vet for 2 weeks away, rinse the eye with saline solution (do not wipe or rub it). If the eye is worse tomorrow then see the regular vet. If it’s still a problem in two weeks you already have the exotic vet appointment 🙂 You can always cancel the exotic appointment if you don’t end up needing it.

Thanks guys, I guess that photo doesn’t look too bad at all but it’s actually very red the skin itself.

but yeh I’ll try giving it a wash with saline thank you I might still take him to the vet later to just see what they say as the consults are free anyway at the normal vets so no harm there but it makes me feel better that you don’t think it looks bad I’ll keep an eye on it
