Argh. I am SO unorganized. I was never this way when I was younger, I always had the proverbial place for everything…yadda-yadda. I have been the executress of both my and my birthmother’s estates for the last 20 years or so and you’d think I’d keep my stuff together so I can take it on the road every year and get my accountant started on the taxes LONG before April 15.

        But noooooo…..

*finds something else to do besides shuffling paperwork for another few hours*

        How about you all?

Oye, I hate doing taxes. Just you mentioning it makes me nauseous. It’s so complicated for us and if you are self-employed, you have a SE tax of 13% that you aren’t allowed to write much off of. That tax is in addition to all the other normal taxes. It’s all much too difficult and brain boggling to do our taxes without adult supervision, so we have an accountant who has at least got us on the right track of organizing everything properly so her job will be easier, less time consuming for her….hence less expensive for us. So finally this past year, I think I got it right – I just have a folder for every single thing, every paper has a place so that by the time tax time rolls around, I just take the folders and hand them over. It took me along time to get a system that works or well..we’ll see. I’m sure we’ll get a scolding from our tax queen if we hand her something that is ridiculous.

OK I heard…that Californians would be getting an IOU for tax rebates…is that true? Cuz I would freak out and send IOUs for any govt bill I ever got after that… I heard it on the news though?? Anyone know?

I can’t wait for taxes, I always get money back and that’s what we use to go on vacation …plus my aunt files them for me

I also heard US taxes are VERY complicated-ours are pretty simple I think, less rebates and stuff to fill out.

Hahaha, something tells me K&K that the govt wouldn’t accept IOUs, although they may be perfectly happy to hand them out!

So far, knock on wood, everyone I know that has filed so far, has received their money, not IOU’s.

And yes, taxes are VERY complicated for those of us who are self-employed and/or own a business – it’s like a science! It can get complicated for those who own land, rentals and of course, takes more accounting with IRAs, but WOW the whole self-employed business thing – just ridiculous how complicated it is. My husband always gets so bent out of shape when we are at accountants office. He says the fact that we need an accountant to help us with this means that the tax system is much too complicated! We can try to do it ourselves, but there is sooooo much to know, and it’s risky – we would either end up paying too much or worse, too little, and the IRS is just crazy with penalties and fees if you don’t do it right in their favor.

Okay, I need to back away….I’m getting stressed out just thinking about this. LOL!

OK but I would *Try* …I do send pennies in the return envelope they send you with credit card applications…you know the ones that are prepaid-and they have to pay by weight LOL Ok, maybe I wouldn’t try…but…

*Hugs* I can’t imagine doing them myself…I know their are computer programs and stuff, but yeah. I already recruited a volunteer to do our shelter tax stuff in Aug when our fiscal year is over-because I don’t touch math with a ten foot pole (and it’s not allowed to touch me either!!)

OHHH, MM, GLAD YOU ASKED! Don’t hate me, but….

I did them last weekend AND I’m getting a refund…AND…I FINALLY bought a laptop!!!

OK, last year I spent most of the time being employed part time after losing my job the year before. I got into the nice place where I work now, but they weren’t budgeted to take me on full time until October. I had to move in with my parents until that happened, finally got back on my feet this past November and then got Sammykins. So I had a lousy year. SOOOOOOO, the tax bracket was all off once I went full time and I was owed several hundred as a result. Best Buy had a huge sale on an Acer laptop that I just couldn’t resist. Heck, I need it for my job and the budget was cut so much that they reneged on the promise to buy me one to use there. I figure I really need it, plus they sold it with VISTA, a carrying case, and a wireless mouse. I got a router yesterday, so maybe my next post will be from my new toy, uh, piece of equipment!!!!!

I am not from America, I have to clue how it works in America to file taxes, my husband files taxes.

                      Is that a good excuse?

Yes, right now, CA is totally screwed up. The state is out of money (lovely, and my husband works for the state of CA… it might be that he won’t have an income for a while…).

Mine are done, filed, and refunded.   It’s amazing how “inspiring” that $7500 new homebuyer tax credit can be!

I am self-employed, own a home and have a home workspace.  TurboTax is my friend!  I keep my yearly expenses on spreadsheets, and then just plug the numbers in.  It’s pretty easy actually, provided you don’t leave everything until the last minute and you’re organized about your receipts.  I have an envelope that lives on my desk and at the end of a show weekend all the receipts go in there.

Same here, I work full time but also do freelance from home so I can claim a portion of my mortgage, insurance, gas, electric, phone as well as my computer and internet as business expenses. It’s a bit of a pain to keep records, but it sure helps on the refund.

You know you’re bunny whipped when you know your refund is coming next week and the first thing you think of is to start planning to upgrade the bunny condos!

My taxes are simple and a breeze to do, so I usually get them done right away.  But this year I’m waiting until CA has real money to give me for my refund.  Hopefully that should be within the next week…

Well I must say I am impressed with all those who have completed their taxes! That’s inspiring! Yes, it does take organization. The kind I am at a total loss with these days. My tax accountant is also in California, so I have to put all my dox on disc to ship down to her and then hope she can understand my filing system. >.<
She’s a good gal, but I know she is getting on in years, so I wonder if she’ll be able to help me for much longer. When she retires, I have to school someone new in all the quirks of the estate and it’s investments and I am not looking forward to that.

I doubt I’ll be getting a refund. Even though most of my income goes to medical stuff, I have to withdraw a lot of capital to pay my bills and that means having to pay out the nose to the Gov’t. My interest earning assets just don’t cover all I owe.

Next year, though….hopefully, FINALLY medical insurance again. I have to go with someone who takes on pre-existing conditions.
Of course, Prez O may have rendered that all moot by then, but we’ll just have to watch and see how he rolls.

BB, I am SO sorry for giving you something to worry about right before Rucy went in for her molar spurs! (I caught the other thread and I’m so glad to see she came out of anesthesia okay!) But yes, it is one of those trying times of year. If I felt good enough about electronic filing systems, I would just turn all my paper over to data and have it automatically sent to some collection depot and then forwarded on to my accountant…but with my luck, there’d be a glitch somewhere that would hiccup at just the wrong time and *poof!*…buh-bye important documents! 0_o

I haven’t even thought about taxes yet. I never get enough back to motivate me to get them done early. I usually wait till the last few weeks. Queen procrastinator at her best

What is the due date for taxes in the US anyways?

We had someone do our taxes for us this year since we just got married and just bought a house.  Unfortunately the energy savings thing isn’t this year and we can’t get anything back for our new furnace or AC   We had someone come out and water pressure our footer pipes (which only helped a little…yay for digging and waterproofing it ourselves in the spring!) and that was in Jan. so doesn’t count towards this year’s taxes.  Haven’t gotten the refund yet (just did it Monday).  We’re going to look for fridges and ovens tomorrow!  Right now we have the ones that came with the house…an electric oven (I hate electric!) and a small double door fridge (there is absolutely no space in the freezer!).  You know you’re getting to be an adult when getting a new fridge and oven excite you

They offered us that new homebuyers tax cut but it’s basically a no interest loan and you have to pay back $500 a year for 15 years.  So we didn’t take it…it was tempting but I have enough bills during the year.

It’s too bad that we can’t write off our bunnies   Hey you can do it with kids, why no pets?

As an accountant….I am not nearly as organized as one would think. It took me forever to find my tax return from last year. I found alll the copies of all my friends taxes that I did, and then I couldn’t find mine!

As for the $7500 credit – if you are qualified for that it is a really good idea to take it and use it to pay off a debt. That way, you are saving the money in interest. It may not sound like much, but interest on $7,500 over 15 years is a lot! And if you are lucky enough to not have any debt, investing the $7500, even at the low rates we have now will get you some extra $$.

And I totally agree with bunny deductions…these lil guys aren’t cheap

Moo, can you expound on this $7500 tax credit? That’s only for new homebuyers, right? Not someone who is already about 15 years into her 30 year mortgage?

Here, here! Tax rebates for bunny mums! I second the motion!

BTW, Pam, congrats on the new laptop! ^_^ I’d get one myself, but I’d blow it up within a week, easy.

Regarding investing – My husband and I were just talking about that today. It’s only a matter of time before the market ends up going back up and unless you need the $$ right away then investing would be a good option according to our accountant too and some other friends who are financial advisors.

Mimz: No worries! I’d rather be thinking about taxes to take my mind of something more emotionally stressful – so you did me a favor!

If you bought your first home after April 2008 you can get a $7500 credit on your taxes.  It will have to be repaid over 15 years but it will save me a bundle in interest.

If you waited until this year you can take it on next year’s taxes and THAT version doesn’t have to be repaid!

It’s a nice incentive…but it’s the other $300 000 I think the gov should helf me out with Something tells me I wont own a home for a long long time!
