Today, Bruno had some really wet, soft, sticky poo that made a mess cleaning up.  It wasn’t liquid, just more like a gel.  It didn’t look like coffee grounds, so I don’t think it’s cecals.  It was the same size and shape as the rest of his pellets, but looked wet, was slightly darker (could be from being ‘wet’) and was sticking together.  I have been giving him daily fruit treats – the tip of my banana, or a 1/8 half-wedge of apple.  Also, I don’t think he had any or much hay today until I got back from town with the new stuff.  He didn’t seem to like the old.

What could it be?  Will it pass?  I really can’t let him out of his cage if he’s going to do this all the time!  It’ll destroy my carpets, since he seems to go outside the cage occasionally.

I think those are probably just missed cecals. If it becomes a problem, his diet might be too rich.

I’d try cut out the treats completely and get him on mainly hay. Is he going for the new hay? A small pinch of rolled oats may help too.

Have you introduced any new veggies to his diet? This always has to be done slowly and some buns are sensitive to certain veggies.

I didn’t do that with the red leaf lettuce – I figured it was essentially the same as the green leaf lettuce. Was that wrong?

Also, the rest of his poo thorough out the day and after wasn’t like that – just that cluster of 20 or so.

I would cut back on the sweet treats, carrot and banana to see if that makes a difference.  That is most likely the culprit, but you can keep a log of what you are feeding- veggies and treats and what the poos are like to see if there is anything in particular he is sensitive too that you can narrow down.

                  Hi Dawn –

Mimz and I have been “experimenting” with our Buns diets – as we both had Buns that were having similar sets of smeary poops.

I cut out all pellets ( and she was having Oxbow Bunny Basic) and went with her two BIG servings of greens ( which I dried as best I could) and tons of hay. Coco got three of four handfuls of a mixtures of Hay – Oat, Brome, Orchard and Botanical.

I also cut out ALL treats. No fruit. No extra non-green veggies. No papaya tablets.

After a few days, her poops were improving and I wasn’t finding the smooshy ones around…I re-introduced about an eighth of a cup of pellets that I would scatter into her Hay…Which moved her right back into Poopy Butt Land.

I cut out the Pellets again – and we seem to be back on the right track. I suspect that her diet is a bit too rich for the winter and the pellets were just extra calories.

I plan on re-trying the pellets after a couple of weeks of nice regular ball poops –

The worst thing that has happened is that she is eating a LOT more hay – which isn’t bad at all – rather than diving for the pellets.

As an aside, Coco is only about 4.5 pounds – so she was never getting more than 1/4th of a cup of pellets a day anyway. She also seems somewhat more active on this feeding pattern.

I also now have gone back to giving 1 papaya tablet a day, which she seems to handle all right.

It really is a test and see situation, though.

                    ^^ Ditto all that.

Defo sounds like cecals. Could be he’s sensitive or the diet is too rich.

You didn’t do wrong-they have complicated tummies and it’s tricky-each is different.

Like baleful said, you’ll need to experiement.

If it’s sensitivity, you could just take the red cabbage out and stay with the veggies you know and slowly intro new ones (so you know which he’s sensitive too)
But it could be just a hard tummy, in which case you’d need to decrease pellets and try to fill with veggies.

It’s really a ‘try and see’ thing with diet tweaking

                    keep us posted!!!

After that one time, he hasn’t had any problems. So I’m not sure… I kept in the red lettuce, but I’ve been doing it half and half with green leaf lettuce, which is fine for him. I haven’t given any “sweets” like fruit since that time. He hasn’t noticed, beyond staring intently into the kitchen while I was eating a banana in there (he won’t leave my bedroom for whatever bunny reason). So I think that it was the fruit; what I thought was a non-dangerous snack amount was too rich for him. He’s still eating hay, greens and pellets with enthuasism.

I’ll keep an eye out, but thanks for the advice guys. Lesson learned!

Isn’t it the truth – I finally sussed out that my husband and daughter were sneaking all sorts of extras to Coco – banana- raisins, papaya, carrots….

It was the holiday break and she was Pigging out on all the extras ( I started to notice how animated and excited she would get when she would see them)….Well, of course! She was getting major treats!

Poopy butt has all but disappeared ( Thank goodness)

Ahhh me too baleful-Dave sneaks Rupert treats…We’ve finally agreed he can BUT he has to tell me so I don’t add to it with a ‘clicker training session’ cuz that’s when the carpet gets ruined

My bunnies always get the extra treats on the weekends when I’m home all day…if I eat a banana I feel guilty not giving them some…and then later its an apple…and then later they are looking at me with their big bunny eyes when they hear me moving the raisin bag around…thats why they don’t get anything really during the week !
