After the death of Panda’s buddy, i got another doe to bond her with. Its going pretty well so far, but the other rabbit (Maisy) does not appear to know how to groom other rabbits. Panda will hop right up and start licking Maisy’s face and ears, then get frustrated that she won’t groom back and nip her. This goes on a few times until i intervene. Any suggestions on getting Maisy to be more sociable?

It’s not that she’s socially awkward. There are bonded pairs where one bunny does groom the other at all. It’s just the dynamic of the pair. You can help her groom by applying apple juice or mashed banana on Panda’s head. But even that doesn’t always work.

Ok. Panda’s previous friend loved to groom her and be groomed, thats probably why Panda is confuzzled. Thanks!

Maisy might not be ready to submit yet. Grooming is a sign of submission, so I would interpret it as she just doesn’t trust her enough yet to submit in that way. I would keep working with them and build their trust more. Probably will just take some more time. Stress sessions can also help buns realize that they DO want a friend.

It’s true that not all pairs groom each other equally, but it shouldn’t lead to nipping and frustration.

I did a stress session a couple days ago (i have a little brother, so almost every session is a stress session lol) and she always runs over to Panda. Panda started face humping her yesterday, and I left her on for about 4 seconds then pushed her off. Maisy was pretty good about it. There was no nipping, at least.

With face humping, you can spin the humper around so they are on the correct end, and see how that goes. For now try not to let face humping go on in case there’s a bit to the sensitive areas :p

And yes, no nipping is good!

She humped both ends, Maisy seemed fine with it. I’m not too surprised; Panda used to do it to her previous buddy, even after they were completely bonded. As long as it doesn’t freak Maisy out or hurt her, I see it as just a display of dominance.
