› Forum › DIET & CARE › So what is your bunny’s favorite treat?
Jack and Rucy love raisins and bananas. I have to be really careful not to give them too much as they are great beggers!
Bailey has a very sensitive digestive system, so she can only handle rosemary and mint. Anything sugary upsets her stomach.
Bugsy LOVES bananas too. He goes nuts when he even thinks he smells banana. He dances around my legs and I have to be careful not to step on him. He used to love those yogurt drops before I learned they were bad for rabbits.
Uh, oh, yogurt treats are bad? What have your heard about them?
Jewels and Dibs love ’em. They smell so good, I’ve even been tempted to give them a try. LOL.
Bunny cookies! Hands down outright favorite thing in the whole wide world! I’ve got a recipe that I altered from the HRS web site. If anyone is interested, I can post it.
Yes! (BINKY BINKY BINKY) Absolutely share. Make sure to include. How often a bunny can have them and how long can you store them for.
Thanks HopperBunny!
Here’s some information about it. Just basically says, that it can cause a serious, possibly fatal reaction. I am thinking it’s just regarding long term because my bunnies didn’t have any reactions, and I had been feeding it to them for months before I found out.
Here’s the article. http://www.rabbit.org/chapters/san-diego/diet/foods.html,
Then scroll down to to the bottom of the fruit list. It talks about it there.
My 2 girls absoloutely LOVE crasins!
They know whats coming when they hear me shake the bag, so they run to the cage door.
I’ve seen ads for those. Aren’t those like a raisin cranberry mix or something. I’ve got to try those because my bunnies really like raisins. Thanks!! They are just at a regular grocery store? If so, next time, I’m going to get some and see how they like ’em.
Welcome Kyla_xx! Now you’re entered into the drawing for the “Bunny Goody Basket” twice. Good Luck!
Two of my bunnies really like craisins. But it’s so funny because my bunny Jack is very picky. While my other two gobble up apple slices, he sniffs at it, licks it, sniffs it, backs away, then watches the others continue to gobble it up and then he decides to take a bite.
The same thing happens with the craisins. He seems to eat it only because his bunny girl friends are enjoying them. But if they are not around, he doesn’t eat apples or craisins.
So, Kyla_xx, your bunnies sound adorable! What do they look like? What are their personalites like? You can either share here or up in the original welcome.
Have a craisin day!

i tried the yogurt drops, she didnt even touch them. i tried bananas, nope their either. i am still yet to try greens on her. i bought her a feed thats kind of a trail mix kind, she absoloutly loves it, especially the seeds that are in it. i want to slow her down on pellet and feed though and give her more greens. yeah, back to the treats, i bought these apple flavored tree sticks from the local pet store and she absoloutly loves them. soon as i put them in the cage she shreds all the bark off and knaws on the rest.
Hey Lopdaddy, just wanted to give you a heads up on
feed with seeds and stuff. Long-term it can cause an imbalance in
the bacteria in their digestive system. The imbalance can cause a serious
case of gi stasis.(which can be fatal if not caught in time)
So you may want to look for a high fiber pellet only type of feed. A good
one is Oxbow Bunny Basics for Babies (up to7 months) It’s high in
fiber, low in fat which keeps there digestive system healthy. Though they
get a lot of fiber from hay, they still need it in their pellet too. (After 7
months, you’ll want to gradually switch to Bunny Basics for adults.)
If you do decide to change to a healthier pellet, I’m sure your Princess Button
won’t like it. It will be like going from ice-cream and candy to broccoli
and spinach. You just have to slowly mix it in over a month gradually
increasing the healthy pellet portion until it’s only the healthier pellet by
the end of the month. You don’t’ want to switch too fast because it can
cause serious diarrhea.
With my first rabbit, I also didn’t have the healthiest feed, it was way back
when before I knew about their sensitive digestive systems…anyway, when I
went from my old alfalfa, nut, and stuff pellet to Oxbow, he would snuff his
nose at it, and leave it in the dish, but he got hungry and in a few days, he
was eating it no problem.
Dark leafy greens are really a great for bunnies too. Parsley
is high in fiber and good for their digestive system. A great mixture
includes: dandelion, parsley, cilantro, chicory, bok choy, romaine
lettuce. Since she’s under a year, you just want to gradually add.
When she’s a year old the House Rabbit Society recommends 2 tightly packed cups
(per 6 pounds) per day.
You probably already know all this stuff, so just ignore my suggestions and
forgive me for imposing my “know it all” advice :
) Over the last five years I’ve just heard so many sad
stories of bunnies getting fatally sick, and their owner didn’t know why
because they were given the wrong advice from a pet store or breeder. They are
infamous for that. And then the poor owner is left heartbroken one day.
So now I always just post the recommended diet provided by the House
Rabbit Society.
EGADS! Sorry for the book!
well i stopped at the pet store today because i was running out of the mardi-gra stuff. ive been doing a trial and error with her. i did find today at petsmart a huge bag of timothy based pellets. i picked those up and mixed them in with the last cup or so of the mardi-gra feed. im am well aware of the diet and how sensitive their digestive tract is. i picked up rabbits for dummys. a good book for any new or experienced rabbit owner. also, if you have a mini lop, check out http://www.minilop.org great site with forums and every single bit of info on lops.
Oh great! And thanks for the link!
My kids looove the oxbow papaya enzyme tablets, and since it’s heavy shed season, they’ve been getting at least one daily.
I also like to give them unsweetened dried fruit and was happy to discover the new trader joe’s dried strawberries, which are really reasonable Every once in a while they’ll get a sliver of fresh apple or banana.
My bunny loves mint. I have great dinner for your bunny on its birthday I will see if I can post it if anyone wants it.
Welcome LPuff! Now you’re entered into the monthly drawing for posting in the forum. Good Luck.
My bunnies love mint too. They also love rosemary.
I’d love to hear about a great idea for a bunny birthday dinner.
How many bunnies do you have? What do they look like?

What?!?! Trader Joe’s has dried strawberries? I think I will have to pick some up for me, erm the bunnies- well both of us if the strawberries make it home that is! I’d better get two bags! Thanks for the info!!!
After reading everybody’s posts, I decided that my rabbits are a little strange! The only treats they like are dried papaya and dried apples. They turn up their noses at bananas and raisins. Kahlua will eat a slice of apple, but Chloe won’t have anything to do with it. As soon as they hear the bag crinkle, they come running for their dried papaya! I even tried the apple sticks, nope, didn’t like them! I tried giving them strawberry tops, nope…no deal. I did find this one treat that had a piece of dried apple on a stick, so it doubled as a treat and a chew-toy. They loved that! Chloe chews on her stick, but as soon as Kahlua finishes his treat, he doesn’t want the stick anymore. They are veggie lovers, but I have to keep a separate list in my head because they like different veggies which makes it difficult sometimes when I go to the supermarket!
Bunnies4ever – That’s funny about they like different greens. Mine are like that too. For example, Bailey really likes cilantro, while Jack and Rucy just nibble at it with slight interest. They all seem to love Italian Parsley.
What greens do each of your bunnies prefer?
They both love romaine lettuce, italian parsey, regular parsley, watercress, dandilion leaves, cilantro and bok choy. Chloe hates basil. Kahlua loves it.. I occasionally give them kale, Chloe doesn’t like it, but Kahlua devours it. Since Kale can’be toxic over time, I rarely give him any. Kahlua loves the tops of the carrot with the greens stll attached, but Chloe just stiffs at it. Next I’ll try brussel sprouts and see how that goes. Trying one vegetable at a time is a really good idea. It gives you the chance to see if it causes any stomach upset. So far, I haven’t had any problems.
bunnies4ever – What a great variety. I know that whole thing about Kale. My bunnies love Kale but they also rarely get it. Watch out for brussel sprouts (you probably already know) that for some bunnies, they can cause painful gas.
So far Sable’s treats are limited to some romaine lettuce and baby carrots. Though he doesn’t seem too sure about the carrots. I think his favourite is still the hay cubes. I think he would chew on one of those all day if I let him.
I may have to try baking up some of those bunny cookies. Then dh will think I have really gone over the top! .. I say babies are made to be spoiled.
Boo loves raisins and romaine lettuce, i havnt had him that long so im still testing treats on him, I baught natural herb biscuits (Auntie Ems Bunny Biscuits) that are a Timothy based treat biscuits. They are flavoured with oat and brome hay and also contain a blend of herbs like mint, parsley and dill he goes berzerk over them jumping up his lttle tail goes from side to side at super speed as soon as he hears the door he races over.
My bunnies think carrots are “eh…okay”, but they don’t go crazy over them. So funny how carrots became the “mascot” veggie for rabbits, when I find they are not the favorite treat of most bunnies.
That is so true about the carrots. All my friends ask me the same question. “What do you feed your rabbits? Carrots?” I tell them no, carrots have too much sugar and isn’t the main food for rabbits. They always have the same reply, “well, Bugs Bunny ate carrots!”. I hate that! I’m so tired of hearing that same reply over and over. It’s amazes me how most people think when it comes to rabbits; that all they eat are carrots.
My bun Seamus goes absolutely batty if someone in the room even opens a banana, haha. I think it’s because when he had an eye infection a few months ago, his oral antibiotic was banana-flavored and afterwards for a little treat we’d give him a tiny little piece of an actual banana… so he must have built up some positive associations along the way! Both my buns *love* a little bit of carrot now and then but my other bun Floppy will do just about anything for a piece of apple. Since she is very feisty and detested being picked up when we first got her, to acclimate her to the idea every time we practiced holding her she’d get a miniscule apple slice. Now she’s much more compliant!
Hey, now that’s an idea! Give a bunny a treat when you handle them. I know that Rucy gets so bent, she won’t eat, but I’ll try it on Bailey.
At least this is a good idea to try and maybe it will help other hard to handle bunnies become at least tolerant enough to get a nail trim.
Everyone keeps mentioning mint and rosemary…I have not given my bunny these yet…they would be found around the lettuce right? ….I am NOT a cook…lol…sounds like he would love this!
Riley – they are usually found in the produce section so they probably would be around the lettuce :~)
Cadbury goes absolutely INSANE for bananas. I call bananas “crack for bunnies.” She’s really funny. She like carrots ok, and she doesn like grapes. As for greens, her favorite is curly parsley. She also likes romaine, collard greens, cilantro and basil. I just introduced dill, and she’s not sure what to make of that yet!
^^ LOL!
My bunnies both LOVE raisins. They are both pretty picky initially with anything new, but after a few tries, they go bonkers for just about anything…
Their favorite foods are:
Kokanee: Parsley
Kahlua: Raddichio
what is that bunny cookie recepie? id like to make it
LilyBear, I’ve made modifications to that recipe. Here is my twist on that recipe (a.k.a HoppyBunny): https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&forumid=1&tpage=1&view=topic&postid=95#95
Thanks Scarlet, I will have to make some. Yum Yum for bunnies.
Lisa my two just adore them! I think your brood will too!
Thanks! I bought the mint and he loves it! How much should I give him at one time?
Luey gets only an occasional treat which is generally a small piece of banana … he will not eat raisins, cranberries, parsley, mint … very fussy bunny! But he goes nuts over his brocolli.
My piggies love banana
Dawn xx
Our gang LOVES raisins. They will stand up to beg for them, eat them out of our lips, and push each other out of the way to get them.
Bananas are a morning favorite. They know that Scooter brings the breakfast banana to them, because they will come to the corner of their enclosure closest to the door, stand up, and otherwise go crazy. When Annette goes into the living room in the morning, they look up, think “wrong big stupid old bunny” and ignore her. Go figure….
I just made some cookies tonight, sort of *winged it* from other recipes I’ve read…
I threw two bananas, some papaya, pineapple and carrots in a blender, Then added whole oats (they said natural, nothing added etc.) until they were firm and cooked them at 350. Rupert and Kahlua love them, Kokanee will have to wait until she is feeling much better to have some though
A couple of weeks ago, I started Holly on greens. She loves parsly, cilantro I think is an aquired taste for her, romaine lettuce seems to be her least favorite. This week I mixed a little bit of each together. The parsly is always the first to go. Her poo is also a lot healthier looking than when I first got her.
She is an absolute banna nut! Like someone else said, if she thinks she smells it she beggs like there is no tomorrow. Tonight I walked by her eating a banana and she went nuts. I had to share. I don’t mind She’s soo cute when she eats it. I tried a tiny slice of apple. She nibbles at it, but it isn’t her favorite.
mine loves rosemary and parsley and he adores banana but i have only given it him once as a treat he hates celery which is a shame as it is so cheap and one bag would last for a long time, he also doesnt like apple or tomato.. weird bunny hehe
I have to say that bananas are Hopscotch’s favorite treat. He will follow you to the ends of the earth for a little bite. When we need to put him into the livingroom when i go to work we use a whole banana to lure him there. Although he goes nuts for the banana he also LOVES the occaisional brussel sprout (they can cause gas problems – but Hopscotch has never been bothered) He nibbles a bit then he throws it across the floor running after it to try and catch it. One sprout can occupy him for 30 – 45 minutes. I have to take a video it is so funny to watch! Mango loves all food – she always seems hungry!
