Why did you get your rabbit?
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet?
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit?
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits?
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave.
cuz hubby allergic to cats
not since I grew up
yep
b4 and after I did the research first about bunny proofing and GI stasis feeding spay/neuter etc
I raised rabbits as a kid for show and food. had my pet I would take in the house but mom wouldn’t let him live in the house. no matter how hard I tried. hehahha
I basically came to be a bunny slave because i was in a pet store and i came across 2 bunnies being kept in awful conditions, and at that time i thought that rabbits didnt do much but sit there, although i knew they werent being properly looked after there so i did some research online about bunnies and came across all this info about house rabbits, after alot of research i decided to get one (i did complain about the pet store by the way and they are no longer allowed to sell any live animals) and so i got hopscotch, been a bunny slave ever since!!!
domino: birthday present
un-named: spur of moment
Where did you get your first rabbit?
The Rabbit Haven, rescue and adoption.
Why did you get your rabbit?
Our daughters really wanted a pet, and my wife is allergic to dogs and cats. A family from school went away for three weeks, and we pet sat for their bunny while they were away. We liked him so much, we decided to get our own.
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet?
No.
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit?
A little, based on our petsitting experience. We knew about feeding greens, GI problems, but not much else.
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits?
I learned a lot from various web sites and from the counselors at The Haven.
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave.
I was originally going to buy a bunny from a breeder and put him in a hutch in the back yard. I could not see having a rabbit in the house. Now, they OWN the house.

Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit? not at all… lol
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits? sadly what i knew about rabbit care was initially all from a very out-dated book… until i found binky bunny that is!
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave. my dad taught me to appreciate all animals / wildlife / nature and showed me that you can gain a lot from just observing which i think helped make me a good bunny slave. i love to sit & watch the buns!
Ok, so here it goes. Last year, a leveret came almost knocking on my door. Where I live there are lots of hares, and this tiny little thing must have lost its way. I can’t imagine how she ended up at my door, considering I have 5 dogs!! Anyway, there was this terrible thunderstorm, and I simply could not leave her there alone. She did not struggle at all, I picked her up and brough her in. I kept her for a few days, I gave her hay and fed her baby milk with a syringe. When the weather got better and she looked stronger, I released her in a nearby hutch, where there were lots of other wild babies and hares. I fell in love with rabbits. I did not keep her because she was a wild animal and she belonged outside and free. So I started doing some research regarding bunnies, domestic bunnies. I read as much as I could regarding, diet, health, care, diet, housing. It took me a while to finally adopt Baileys because I just can’t stand having animals in cages, and I also had to talk hubby into it… Finally I decided to use a room as a bunny room, that seemed fine with me. Then I devised their bunny proofed garden. Then I felt I my house was ok for rabbits. I first got Baileys and then I rescued Lemoncello.
I never thought I would ever have bunnies as pets. I had no idea they were so addictive! I simply adore them!!! And the term bunny slave could not be more accurate. I am always cleaning their room and litter boxes, I keep greens in my fridge that I did not even know existed! I have travelled for 3 hours on a week day evening to get them to the only savvy vet I know… I try to be as responsible about their care as possible. And they are worth the effort! All my animals are, really.
So, that’s my story!
Here’s a picture of the leveret I fostered:

Where did you get your first rabbit? Save A Bunny
Why did you get your rabbit? My son pleaded with me to adopt a bunny when he was volunteering at Save A Bunny for a Physiology class. We “fostered” Edson first to make sure and then fell in love with him immediately and officially adopted him.
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet? No way
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit? Absolutely not. I was overwhelmed at first until I got the “system” down. I could not believe how much work it was, way more than a cat or dog! The first week we had him I wanted to send him back but of course I could not imagine him back in a cage when he had such a good thing here plus I could never do that no matter what. Now it’s no different than any other chore.
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits? Yes I learned everything from Save A Bunny and discovered this site from a link on the Save a Bunny site.
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave. I have become such a slave because Edson is so endearing and I would do anything for that face! Wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Where did you get your first rabbit? Pet store at the Mall in the Berkshires. (It closed shortly thereafter.)
Why did you get your rabbit? Had moved to the Berkshires and my nephews thought I’d be lonely without a pet. Stevie was allergic to cats, I couldn’t have a dog, so they decided to get me a rabbit for my birthday. Drove up with my bro and dragged me to the Mall to shop that night. Pile of baby bunnies in the window – all black and white except Spockie who was gray and white. They picked him out. He came home with us where my bro had brought a new cage and supplies as his part of the present. Best gift ever.
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet? No. Knew a coworker with a huge bunny & a cat for pets; thought it unusual.
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit? Not at all.

Why did you get your rabbit?
After thinking about and deciding against getting a dog, my bf told me I could get any “little” pet I wanted. I decided on a rabbit since I’ve owned lots of animals but never a rabbit.
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet?
I knew when I moved out on my own I would own as many pets as I could
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit?
I didn’t know much about rabbits when I got Stormy, I thought they were very similar to Guinea Pigs which I had as a teenager (boy was I wrong). I had no idea how complex they are and how much personality they have.
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits?
Rabbits for Dummies really helped me to learn what I was doing wrong with Stormy and then I started finding tons of great sites.
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave.
How can you own one (or three) and not be a bunny slave???
Where did you get your first rabbit?
Mini Critters pet store—Knowing what I know now, I would have never bought a bunny at a pet store, but I think Boston was meant to be with us!
Why did you get your rabbit?
When I was married I really wanted a pet, but we lived in an apartment. Right before my separation and then divorce, my husband at the time said we could get a hampster. After moving out on my own, I couldn’t get rid of the itch of wanting a pet. I started dating my boyfriend and got into my head I wanted a bunny, I have no idea why, but I knew I didn’t want a hampster. I begged the BF for almost a year. The only reason he finally caved is because he started working nights and thought a bunny could keep me company. Now he’s off nights and I have my bun! ![]()
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet?
Not until about a year or so ago, it never really crossed my mind.
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit?
NO!
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits?
The girl at the pet store told me buns were very low maintence and cost about $20 a month!!!! HAHA….I’ve learned almost everything I know from this website and rabbit.org.
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave.
I love being a slave, just can’t wait for the spay!
The same thing happened to me as Bunnycraze– sort of. Last year, about two days before I was going home for the summer, my mom called me and said “I did something very bad. I… I took home a baby bunny.”
Considering after my chinchilla died she had told me “no more pets until after college,” and she hadn’t been too happy when I brought home a hamster a few months before, I was pretty surprised, but apparently the custodian at her school had run over a nest of baby cottontails with the lawn mower and one little one had survived (barely.) Not knowing what to do, she scooped him up and took him home. We didn’t think he’d survive the night (he was concussed and unmoving), but I started researching rabbits. He managed to make it, and actually got a little better, but we couldn’t get him to eat or take KMR and he passed away less than a week later, on Mother’s Day. My mom and I had told ourselves we wouldn’t get attached to him, but we were both really distraught. On top of that, I hadn’t gotten to use my newfound volumes of rabbit knowledge (I even read up on bunny body language!), so I was also left with this strange feeling that I should be taking care of a bunny but wasn’t.
Anyway, we ordered a new chinchilla (that’s what we knew) from this really wonderful little family-run petstore, but unfortunately she met the same fate as the poor baby bunny; she was a baby and had apparently been sick. The petstore apologized profusely and said we could come back any time within the year and order a new chinchilla, so we decided to give it some time.
Meanwhile, a few weeks later when I was picking up something for the aforementioned hamster at the awful petstore in the mall at which I work, I started to watch one very strangely colored, kind of skinny bunny. At the time my mom and I thought we were allergic to bunnies, but I noticed that he had funny curly fur behind his ears, and I thought he might be special, so I looked up curly bunnies and found out that rexes were hypoallergenic. On top of that, he had been there for weeks and bunches and bunches of “cuter” baby bunnies had been bought around him, and he was looking kind of unhealthy and I was really afraid that he’d be snake food if someone didn’t take him home, so I convinced my mom we needed a bunny. She was wary of buying him do to the possible allergies, the lack of bunny necesities, and the chinchilla coupon, but eventually caved in, so Monty came home with us. Rather hysterically, we returned home to a message from the good petstore that apparently “our chinchilla was in” (wait, what? but we didn’t…), and we ending up bringing him home, too, to my mom’s great chagrin. (That whole “no pets until after college” *thing.*)
Anyway, one bunny turned into three when my mom kidnapped Monty to keep for herself and told me to, more or less, go get my own, but that’s another story.
Where did you get your first rabbit? Bailey came from a pet store at the West Edmonton Mall
Why did you get your rabbit? Oh my, how could one possible resist Bailey? He was such a little cutie. And it honestly didn’t occur to me that there’d be anyplace other than a pet store to get a rabbit. He was an impulse purchase though so we didn’t research that part of it as much as we could have. We were actually on our way to see a movie at the mall and passed by the pet store. We usually went in there to check out the bunnies on our way passed and there was Bailey, just as cute as could be. I knew we had to have him.
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet? We’d actually talked about it for quite a while, and had done a little research on it but hadn’t really gotten to the seriously looking into it part yet.
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit? Oh heck no! I thought we had a fairly good idea but bunnies turned out to be so much more complex than I’d thought! I grew up with cats, and I figured hey a bunny lives in a cage, comes out to play from time to time, that’s got to be less work than a cat right? Uhm, no. I love our buns but cats are so much more self sufficient, bunnies rely on their people for so much more.
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits? Everything I know about life I learned from my bunnies?
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave. When we brought Bailey home I had no idea how much having a rabbit would add to the household. In so many respects, lol. They add so much personality and joy, and frustration. And cost – oh my gosh I had no idea how much looking after them was going to cost! Didn’t stop us from adding the other 5 though.

Where did you get your first rabbit? A petstore just because I had no idea shelters even had bunnies.
Why did you get your rabbit? I am horribly allergic to cats and dogs and I had begged my husband to death for a “fluffy animal.” I fell in love with Carrera as soon as I saw her.
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet? I had a large lop when I was little but it never crossed my mind as an adult to have one.
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit? I searched online a lot but I think for the first 2 years of Carrera’s life I think we did everything you could do wrong for buns. Oops!
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits? After a few years we finally figured it all out.
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave. My husband is now a huge bunny slave and even he says he cant imagine life without them now that he has had them.
Where did you get your first rabbit? Bailey came from a pet store at the West Edmonton Mall
Really? I forgot they had a pet store there! I have family in Edmonton and when I was younger I remember seeing little lops there. They were very cute, but were in like a display case looking thing. Really sad. Maybe they improved when you got bailey? I haven’t been there forever! Well sorry just thought I’d comment on that!![]()
Where did you get your first rabbit? Colorado House Rabbit Society
Why did you get your rabbit? A few months after my beloved Husky passed, the house was so lonely with no animals but, we were not ready – still not – for another dog. My husband does not like cats, I had to come up with something else. Lets hear it for http://www.dailybunny.com!
Did you ever think you would have a rabbit as a pet? NO
Did you really know what you were getting into when you got your first rabbit? Kind of, the people at Co-HRS make sure adopters are educated about rabbits.
Or did you learn after you got your rabbit about rabbits? I am still learning!
And anything else about how you ended up as a bunny slave. I love learning about new things – the bunny’s are constantly teaching me. J can’t believe how much he likes having them around.I don’t think I will ever get use to the cuteness!
