Took my nearly 10 week old lionhead to the vets today, just for a routine check up to make sure everything was fine as only had her a couple of weeks. The vet was dreadful and didn`t really seem to do anything. He basically just said a healthy bunny is a clean bunny (which she clearly is) and told me all the basics I already knew. When I asked about teeth and nails he said there`s no point in checking at such a young age (is this true??) and to bring her back in a couple of months.  He did however give her the myxomatosis jab, but didn`t seem to register the whole of it and that was it. I`ve been reading up on other injections and want to book her in for the vhd in 2 weeks. Do house bunnies need anymore injections or anything? Also want to know when I should start the worming process for prevention?

Yes, she’s pretty young so no need to really check the teeth or nails.

I don’t think you need to worm her if she is indoors as well. I’m not sure about injections as we don’t do any where I live.

My vet always checks teeth, even in the babies. Sometimes there can be early issues, so its best to get everything checked.

Not sure about any injections, as there aren’t any vaccines approved in the states for buns.

Did he do a fecal test? It’s good to get one done to check for pinworms and such when you first get your bun.

No, he didn`t really do alot, Im glad he gave her the jab otherwise it would of been a wasted and expensive journey (it worked out cheaper for the jab than just the regular check up) at what age to your start checking teeth and nails then? Also pets at home here do the worming paste that the vets use for fairly cheap to prevent worms and such, so would rather adminstrate that myself to prevent anything, but not sure at what age is appriopriate as shes still a babah

Thunders-mumms, what country are you in? As far as vaccines, there is no need (as of yet) for them in the US, especially house rabbits. The same goes for worming… if they don’t need it, don’t do it. That being said, there are other countries where it is the standard to get rabbits vaccinated and dewormed.

We have a forum member RWAF who is with the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund in the UK – maybe you can PM her about vets in your area and about what types of vaccines, etc….that is recommended.
