My bun likes to check in a lot but doesnt usually sit with me for long. He prefers to “do the rounds” and only linger with me for a few moments at a time while hopping around. But every now and then he will lay on my chest/belly for extended periods of time and let me groom him while licking me back. I love these times because it feels like we are really bonding! But just when it seems like we’ve reached bunny bliss he pees on me! Like a full on emptying bladder big old pee.

Its happened multiple times, to me and also once each to two caregivers who watch him when I am away for work, always in the same circumstance.

I’ve read other ppl say this is a sign of claiming the person and it means the rabbit is happy. But is that true? Regardless, I dont enjoy it at all – and it means these nice bonding sessions always end in a sour note with me jumping up flustered, carrying him hurriedly to his litter box while he squirms in my arms, and I rush off to change clothes. I dont think its a positive note for either of us then.

Has anyone had success turning pee-stained bonding seasions into dry ones?

I had a similar issue with Finn when I first got him. The first thing I he did was learn to recognise the signs that he was going to start. He would get really still and flick his tail up. Then I would sit up and move him away from me into the litter box. That was my method. I’m sure other people here have more effective methods. Finn eventually stopped peeing on me but I still keep a watch out for the signs.

Finnigans advice seems sound to me. I think the bun pees because it needs to pee, but cuddling is so nice and the bun is so relaxed it’d be ashamed hop away and find the box to go potty.

So the human needs to be very observant-if the bun starts fidgeting in any way, it could be pee on the way and a good time to put the bunny in the box.

But sometimes the bun doesn’t fidget at all, it just relaxes more and more and eventually pees on the human. This can still happen with my Bam when he sits in my mum’s lap – not every time of course, but once per year or so. He loves my mother. I think he’s just too comfy to move.

Emptying a full bladder indicates that the bun actually needs to pee. Pee marking is more about spraying some pee on the object of desire.

Thanks for the responses! I didn’t think about the difference between marking and full on peeing. It seems to be a case of getting progressively relaxed until he doesn’t want to bother getting up to pee

My bunny has just started that but i don’t know what he is doing, the first time he was on my lap n the second time he was hopping on the sofa…. but i think its more a territorial thing…i can sympathize with the annoyance tho!!! it is very annoying
