So i have a bun that has mild snuffles if you will. Reason I say mild is because a) we had another bunny that had true snuffles – sneezing, white discharge and b) he has just wet nose with the fir matted underneath and then he gets a course of baytril and it goes away, then comes back a few months later, another course of baytril and goes away. He has not really sneezed much at all. Oddly enough he will go the entire day without sneezing but when I go to sleep at the same almost literal exact time I hear a sneeze or two. It’s so weird! Well I don’t live here with him anymore as he is with my parents, but I come every weekend to visit and sleep over and from time to time would fall asleep with his doing 1-3 sneezes and then he would stop and that was that. But literally no sneezing during day at all!!

anyways, so he was on baytril a month ago for like 2 weeks and then a week or so later we noticed wet nose and sort of snuffley sound so we put him on it again (sometimes I think the 10 day time they suggest is too short). So another 2 weeks. He is off it for a few days now and again I notice wet nose and a little snuffley sound! Ugh. Did maybe the snuffles like adapt to the medicine? I don’t want him to be resistant to baytril cause he tolerated it the best. TMS and another medicine which I’m trying to remember the name of but it’s late, made his tummy upset.

so I reintroduced echinacea to his diet today as he was on it before. But now do we try another antibiotic and ugh which could be tolerated the best when I worry about his gi issues and sensitive stomach. He just had blood work done a few weeks ago as he lost a bit of appetite but after a week of baytril he was back to his normal appetite and he has stayed that way. He has also fallen down and bit his lip on the way down and had a little bump there (which we got checked out to make sure it wasn’t a cyst or anything bad) so maybe that also affected his appetite as I’m sure his lip hurt. But anyways he’s acting totally fine and just a little snuffling sound and no discharge. And on-off wet nose. I don’t think it’s teeth, he’s had X-rays done in past and exam and nothing there that would be problematic we think.

thanks and sorry for the long post!

It is very possible every previous course of Baytril has been too short. 2 weeks is what I consider the absolute minimum course for URI antibiotics, so considering he has never had it consecutively longer than that, I would suspect it has always been cut short before the entire infection was wiped out, so it simply takes some time to re-multiply and come back. At this point, I would consider doing a culture & sensitivity test to confirm what antibiotic(s) are effective against the infection and ensure the course runs long after symptoms appear to go away to ensure the entire infection is gone.

If the frequency of sneezing is only 1-3 times a day though, I would not actually be concerned. That could just be environmental irritant sneezes and may not be an infection at all.

I agree. Either the Baytril is working, but not enough time is being given. Or you need to try a different antibiotic.

His last course was 2 weeks but the course of 2 weeks before that was only like a week later. Maybe even a little less than full week. Trying to find my notes but it was not a big break between the 2 at all. Any other suggestion for other antibiotic? I’m going to call the vet and ask to see her notes, I know TMS was the one that he didn’t like with his stomach and the other one I just cannot remember the name of. Maybe azithromycin?

last night I didn’t hear any sneezing. During day I check his nose and sometimes wet, sometimes not. But when I pick him up to bring him to living room (he lives in a bedroom upstairs free range), he gets upset and does the grunty noise which then I hear his like snuffled-up “stuffy” sound.

im happy no discharge, no sneezing fits. I just have major anxiety with my last 2 buns as they are both 10+ years old (estimate as they were adopted) so it’s like waiting for something bad to happen and them to die. I had my last 2 bunnies literally die in my arms so it’s really on my mind all the time now as they are not young ones anymore! But trying not to panic and worry as then I start to feel sick and if I’m sick, how can I take care of them? I bet you guys all feel the same, they are like my babies. This anxiety issues when having older bunnies.

I have personally had good luck with Azithromycin, but some say it can reduce appetite. So can Baytril though. Well… any antibiotic really. It really just depends on the bunny. It’s really going to depend on what bacteria is actually causing the symptoms.
