Hi, my bunny is 3 and half months old, she’s been sneezing a lot today and her nose was slighlty wet (other than that, she seems fine, she’s been eating, giving bunny kisses, cuddling and flopling a lot) I am a bit worried because I read that snuffles are dangerous to bunnies, yesterday I heard a weird wet sound from her troat but assumed it was because she was eating watermelon.

I have been taken her to a room with a fan and she floops like 2 mtrs away from it and falls sleep, she’s also been on an airconditioned room for like 20 minutes two days ago during nightime (around 8 p.m), since the heat has been horrible. Can someone with experience help me out please? My parents won’t let me take her to the vet.

Hi, does she stay inside or does she live outside?   Do you have any new scents in the house that might cause an allergy? Or new or different hay? Sniffles can turn bad if not taken care of. My rabbits have had the sniffles many times and I took them to the vet and ha xrays done and did a course of antibiotics. My rabbit had pneumonia once and I didn’t even know because she wasn’t showing any signs. If there is discharge I recommend taking her to the xrays to make sure it isn’t a lung infection like pneumonia, which would require medications to treat. I would ask your parents if you can have a payment plan that you do with them. Best of luck

Does she have any other symptoms besides the sneezing? Did this come on suddenly?

Turns out Holly is a he, no, he sleeps in the living room and there is no new scents around, and the only symptom is just the sneezes they started out of nowhere, he’s been binkying and dashing around, he still eats normally and gives kisses, he only sneezed twice today, and his nose is not as wet as before.

Also, money is not the problem, I’m from Nicaragua and we have issues going out here, since our hospitals don’t have the capability of hosting those with covid, so, we are all quarentined, and there are lots out there who refuse to protect themselves, so my parents refuse to let me go to the vet, thinking I will get sick from covid.

Your parents’ concerns are valid. A lot of people are having trouble with vet care right now.

I’m wondering if he got into some extra dusty hay and it irritated his nose. Has he been eating hay?

I know they have a reason to be concerned, but the vet that could check him only takes clients in especific hours and only one at the time.

He doesn’t get much hay, since is rare to find it, and when he does get it is the processed kind, and it isn’t dusty, he does like to get under my parents bed and there are some dust bunnies under there.

But when he started sneezing he wasn’t under there nor did he went near that place in the whole day.

He only sneezed once today, I also noticed that his dad (yes, we have father and son) had his nose slightly wet, but he doesn’t show any signs of sickness, he doesn’t sneeze at all.

(Also, I know they require hay, but the pet store doesn’t always have it, is rare to find it, his pellets have hay in them tho, I try to give him as many greens as I can to help his diet)

Hay is very important. Pellets contain hay, but they don’t wear the teeth down like actual hay does. You could try feeding him fresh grass, as long as it hasn’t been treated with pesticides or other chemicals. Hay is grass, after all.

It’s actually normal for there to be a little bit of dampness under the nose. This is condensation. Sneezing isn’t necessarily a concern unless it occurs often. Thick, white discharge from the nose or eye is also a concern. So if he has stopped sneezing, then it may be safe to assume something just irritated his nose. If the sneezing continues or he develops other symptoms, then it would be a good idea to take him to the vet.

Ohh I see, thank you!! I’m a bit more relieved now, I want him to be a healthy and happy bunny so I get a bit over concerned sometimes when there seems to be something wrong.

I’m a bit affraid of giving him fresh grass, mainly because I had this friend, who purchased grass from a pet shop, and it turned out the grass had some remanent of ant poison (or something like that), his rabbits died shortly after eating it, I was thinking to give him chamomile, since it sort of looks like hay and it’s not dangerous for them (as far as I know, all the websites say its okay for them to munch)

Do you have the own lawn or a friend with a grass yard? If you just rip handfuls of grass out and you know that you’re taking it from somewhere that hasn’t been sprayed with anything it would be good for him to have a little something to replace the hay. If you can get grass seeds somewhere you can also grow some grass for him inside the house in a container.
