Hey guys… I know I’ve dropped off the site again, work has been insane…

My poor Comet! I’m so worried and can’t sleep. He was treated a few weeks ago for pasturella with baytril. He seemed better, had stopped sneezing and his nose had stopped running. Well he’s sneezing again and his nose is more runny this time than last! He seems to be okay otherwise…not unbalanced, eating okay, pooping okay (although he did have a kind of icky runnier one tonight too but just one and seems to be making regular poos now), flopping down as usual, snuggling with Chubs like usual, doing tooth purrs when I pet him….etc. BUT his nose is really wet and the sides of it are too and he’s sneezing fairly regularly. I’m reading all these pasturella horror stories and getting scared. I will get him more antibiotics first thing in the AM but what else can I do?? Chubs isn’t showing any symptoms at all…but do I need to worry about him too? ugh. my poor guy!

Hi Jenna. Do you have a good vet? I think you might have to have a culture test done to see what bacteria is present. Then the appropriate antibiotic can be used. The baytril may not have been effective or used for long enough.

Also, have you had Comets teeth checked? Runny nose and sneezing can be caused by dental problems also. Even an xray might be in order.

I agree with Jerz. Perhaps the Baytril wasn’t the right antibiotic and the infection has resurfaced. Also it may have given him the runny poos.

Definitely have him seen again. Believe me, I’ve been through the runny nose syndrome and done a lot of extraneous measures to find out what was wrong with Mimzy and even though we’ve no real diagnosis at least we’ve ruled out what it isn’t.

I feel your pain with the no sleep thing. It’s impossible to rest when the buns are unwell. Try to take care of yourself though, so you can take care of Comet and Chubs! ((((((hugs)))))))))

Poor little man. Could it maybe be an allergy, something that he wasn’t exposed to before you moved that is making him all wet nose and sneezy?

I don’t know Monkey, I thought about that too but I don’t know…of course the plants and stuff here are all different but I haven’t directly changed anything they use. And my vet is the best bunny vet in my area but is still not an expert you know? The closest one of those is 2 hours away and car rides are soooo stressful for Comet that I worry about trying to take him to one of those. I will just have to bring him in again this morning and see what they can do his nose looks slightly better this morning and his poos look normal and he’s eating like a champ…

Oh and his teeth are great. It’s nothing to do with dental I don’t think. Straight teeth, lined up correctly, no sores in his mouth, etc…

Did the vet do a culture?

No, but by the time he got into see her, he was clearing up really well and had already been on Baytril for 10 days. (For those who didn’t see my first post, she was on vacation when he got sick the first time and I had to take him to a different vet who was NOT a bunny expert and who pretty much did nothing except over charge me and give some baytril. But he did seem to improve…By the time the closest thing to a bunny expert got back into town, Comet was doing much better and she just gave me baytril for 5 more days to finish clearing it up. She may want to do some now that it has come back, I don’t know.

oh and this vet is good…as in she successfully does rabbit spays/neuters regularly but buns are still not her typical clientel. However she is the ONLY bunny vet in this area.

Yeah, might be time to do a culture to see what he has. If it is indeed pasturella you may have to be more aggressive with treatments and it may take longer than the standard dosages to clear up the symptoms.

Rabbit spay/neuter surgeries are relatively basic for experienced vets, the big difference is the anesthesia process. It’s the diagnostic detective work that really requires a savvy vet. Would the vet be willing to consult with someone else if necessary?

I will ask about getting a culture done and yeah Beka I think she’d be more than willing to do that. Ugh I’m just in this bind too with work. I’m so new and I have no vacation or sick days plus I have court today which I have to be at no matter what. I’m hoping they can even get us in first thing this morning so worried about my boy.

I know. These things don’t ever happen at a GOOD time, not that there’s ever a good time for illness, but you know what I mean. I hope he feels better.

Thanks everybody! I wish so too Monkey but I think a two hour car ride would only add to his sickliness because he HATES the car, even more than Chubs who barely tolerates it…anyway. I took him in again first thing this morning. She made me feel a little better because she does seem to know what she’s doing, there’s just not that many rabbit customers in this area…it’s so little. Anyway, she said she thinks the Baytril is the right antibiotic because this did clear up for almost 3 weeks. She put him on it again, at a slightly higher dose and for a few days longer than last time. If it doesn’t start to get better, she said we’ll run cultures so we can at least rule some stuff out…everybody send healing vibes! I’m still worried but he is still eating well and seems content aside from his runny nose and sneezes. His eyes/teeth/ears, etc all look good. Perhaps he just needed more time on the antibiotics to totally clear it up. Cross your buns ears for us!
