So Kurotta was chomping down his pellets when he suddenly sort of shook and made a squeak sound. It was a very brief shake and short squeak (like those you find in a squeaky plush toy). I was a little startled as I’ve never heard or seen him doing this, so I continued observing him eating and a few minutes later, he shook his head briefly and squeaked again – this time a pellet sort of flew out from his mouth.

I youtubed for choking, sneezing and hiccuping rabbits. It didn’t look like choking as he wasn’t gasping for air and continued chewing the pellets just fine. Didn’t seem like hiccups either as it was not consistent and only happened twice, with a few minutes in between. I can only think of the possibility of it being a sneeze, but I only found one video that was somewhat similar to what I saw/heard.

        Any thoughts or experience?

        Thanks!

It could have been pellet dust going up his nose, since he needs to bend his neck a good degree to get to the bottom of his cage-bowl. It could have also been the beginning of a choke, but his shaking prevented it from happening or in another general way he just made sure it didn’t actually happen.

If it occurs again, I’d say spread the pellets out a bit (larger vessel or smaller quantity presentation) so he isn’t able to force too many pellets in his mouth at once.

It sounds like he was choking but managed to free the pellet himself. If he’s an inhaler it’s a good idea to scatter them. They don’r squeak when they sneeze. Sneezing still sounds like a human sneeze, just more dainty.

Wick – Hmm it happened when he already lifted his head off the bowl and was just in a normal sitting position chewing the pellets, so it probably wasn’t the dust.

A&B – Yeah I watched several sneezing bunny videos on youtube and most were different from what Kurotta did. He does try to chomp a few pellets in one go so…

Looks like I may have to change my feeding time then. I usually just put the pellets in his bowl and then head off to bed, so I don’t get to monitor if he chokes. So it may have happened before but yesterday was the first time I saw it.
