Sneezing

When I picked up my boy from (May 1st), he was already sneezing. They had him on baytril, switched to a different one when I took him home, and switch back to baytril the 15th of May. I was told to go ahead and finish it and then see; he hasn’t finished the meds yet. When we went to the vet, she told us the same thing, finish the meds, wait a week, and see. She also said the he may be chronic based on his paperwork and may need to be on meds his whole life.

The issue is when I first got him, he would only sneeze in the very early hours around 4am. I was there to monitor all day on the weekends and those were the only times he would sneeze. As time progressed, he sneezed more and more. When he was switched back to the first med, it got a little better but now, it’s gotten worse. He’s sneezing different times of the day and much more – for example, 15 sneezes followed by another round of 15 sneezes. Before, one round would do it for him. I’m afraid he’s going to sneeze up his lung! I also hear some snorting or heavy breathing; he’s normally not vocal at all.

I’m sorry but it sounds like you have a sick rabbit on your hands. Baytril is the standard treatment for it. SaveABunny also uses a home made nebulizer where we take a rabbit, put them into a carrier, wrap a plastic bag around it and then put the nebulizer hose into it to give some respiratory meds as well.

I’d also try switching out his hay – changing to an oat hay if he’s eating timothy now or vice versa.  It could be allergies.

I saw a bun being put into that thing but I don’t think mine ever went in.

They are still eating SAB’s hay (mixed with some oat) so I don’t think he’s allergic to the timothy? That just got me thinking though, could he be allergic to aspen and/or making whatever he has worse? I don’t give them aspen but I have hamsters and I give them carefresh and aspen shavings. They are nocturnal so maybe that’s why it started more in those hours?

My Smudge is allergic to timothy, but she still loved eating it. She isn’t allowed it now though.

I’m going through the same thing with Logan, who I adopted in January. He’s had off and on sneezing and nasal discharge since the day he came home with me. First he was on Baytril, and several vet visits later, he’s been diagnosed with chronic respiratory issues. Right now, he’s on a liquid antibiotic (label says SMZ something, can’t remember what it’s usually called) as needed- when his symptoms get worse, I start him on another round of meds. This is working pretty well for him. He sneezes a few times a day now, but no more of those scary sneezing fits!

My vet also told me to eliminate or reduce anything in his environment that could be triggering his symptoms. I switched to a different type of hay, bought a HEPA air filter, tried switching litter, etc. Other people have recommended getting a skull rad (I think this was because sometimes sneezing/discharge can be brought on by a dental issue?) and/or culture and sensitivity test. You might want to discuss that with your vet.
