Hey everyone, i tried to search the forum, but its not working, so i have to start a new topic. sorry

Pepper has been sneezing. Not often, but just maybe two or three times a day. I have a cold right now, and i am all stuffed up and sneezy too. is it possible that rabbits can catch our colds? Do i need to call the vet? Its not often sneezing and its not big sneezes. I checked his nose for discharge and there was none that i could see. i also wonder if maybe its his litter? its very cheap stuff, like a generic carefresh, so there is a lot of dust at the end of the pack, and i have been nearing the end of the pack the last few days, and just finished it today, and this is also about when his sneezing started. He still eats and drinks and poos and pees and plays like normal. Sometimes i think i worry too much

If there is no discharge, and no wetness on the nose or the front paws, it is most likely a reaction to something in the environment. Dust from the litter is certainly a possibility, as is dust from hay. Some bunnies also have allergies like we do, and need to be put on special diets to limit their exposure to things that cause problems. The rhinovirus that is causing your cold cannot be spread to your bunny. Very few pathogens are transmitted between species, most are highly specialized for one kind of host.

Happy to be of help. Please continue to check for any signs of wetness on the nose, chin or front paws, as this is an indication of something more serious.

I think My Winston is allergic to hay dust.
He buries his head in the hay basket – sneezes a bunch – and then buries his head in the hay basket again.
My vet – who is very rabbit savvy – said it is okay for him to do this.

I have a bunny who is very allergic to strong scents, for example Febreze, or those Glade plug-ins, or if I burn scented oils, that could possibly be triggering those sneezes. I also have a bunny who is currently on antibiotics for sneezing, however, she is having discharge. You can tell if there is discharge by looking around the bunnies nose, if the fur looks matted with dried “bunny snot” (don’t know the technical term ) then you will probably need to take your bunny to the vet to see if a course of antibiotics is needed. My bunny is on Baytril, and I’ve given at least 4 other bunnies baytril to cure sneezes with discharge, it is pretty simple to administer, so don’t panic if you do find that there is any discharge.

well so far there is no problems with discharge, there is definately none there. but i will keep checking. and i have plenty of money for the vet if i need to take him so i wont hesitate to take him if needed. he has stopped sneezing so far, so im hoping the litter was it! thanks guys!

just wanted to let everyone know that i changed the litter, and havent lit my scented oil candles since the sneezing started, and i havent heard a sneeze since i stopped. The litter is now carefresh, which is larger chunks and much less dusty than the last litter. Even if i havent heard any sneezes i am still checking his nose daily to be sure there isnt any discharge, because its only been a few days since the litter change. i just wanted everyone to know he is doing great!

Glad to hear he’s doing better.

If my name were Pepper, I’d be sneezing too!
