I rescued Willow, a 9 month old Giant Chinchilla last month from a shelter. My boyfriend and I have noticed that her urine is smelly. Her litter box smells like urine after one day. My other rabbit (male, neutered) does not have this issue. Is there any reason why her urine smells? The shelter told me that she had only been spayed recently, but I don’t know if that has anything to do with this.

Congrats! And thank you for adopting. Have you taken her to a rabbit savvy vet for a general exam? She should be seen to make sure she is okay and then they can do a urine sample to see if she’s got an infection. Giving veggies high in calcium such as kale can cause a UTI to happen very fast. The vet can also give you an appropriate diet for her if she does have a UTI.

What type of litter do you have her using? Regular paper one really doesn’t do good with pee, pine wood pellets are amazing at hiding the stink

Apart from what Bunny House already mentioned about UTIs etc, an unfixed bunny’s urine would smell worse than a fixed bunny. If she only got spayed recently, then there could still be some hormone residues which would make her pee smell more off. It could also be that she’s a bigger breed so her litter box gets filled faster?

I was having issues with my bunny area really smelling because of the litterbox. Others on the site here suggested I try giving my bunny apple cider vinegar to help combat the smell. It has helped so much! I use Braggs brand because it has the mother in there and I just put a half dropper full on her daily veggies. You might try this with your bunny if the smell continues.

Did the shelter give you a certificate of her spay? If she was spayed recently, you should still be able to see fur growing back on her abdomen.

At the time, we found out she was freshly spayed. A few days after I posted this, the smell went away, and all the fur on her belly came back. Thank you all!
