Hello all! I’m jenn & my little bun in question is named kale, he’s a neutered male and he’s 3 years old. when i was away at school he was under the care of my aunt and uncle who loved him and did a good job at caring for him, but I noticed his fur by his butt is pretty clumped with poop and is also matted. I do not know if attempting to give him a butt bath will make the problem worse or better. I have tried brushing out the matts, it is simply not possible without hurting him which is why I assume he gave up trying too. He now smells so bad and I just want him to be clean and comfortable. Should I make an attempt to cut out the matts or should I give him a butt bath? Just looking for some insight!

        thank you!

          Hi there, welcome 🙂

Was the poopy butt from excess cecotropes? Sometimes care givers give too many treats which can cause the soft extra poop problem.  Or unclean cage conditions? Or could it be clogged scent glands?

A bum bath might be a good idea and should help. Def important to clean him up so he doesn’t get fly strike. This video has a very nice explanation of how to do a bum bath:

If he still has lots of matts after that the vet can do a sanitary trim to get him back on track.

Hey! Thank you so much for answering back. Kale is actually free roam, his litter box is changed probably once a day or once every two days. I think it might’ve been from excess cecotrophs, maybe clogged sweat glands too. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t seem like he does a good job at grooming himself unfortunately.

I know a little too well the affects of well-meaning caregivers offering too many treats. 🙄

Is he overweight, do you think? Overweight bunnies can have difficulty grooming their bum.
