Anyone else have a bun like that? Every time we cook, my Monkey gets all skittish and scared like, even now hours after dinner is over, she’s still all skittish with the lingering smells.

I’d hate to have to eat out every night to stop my bun from freaking out

Some bunnies do get freaked out, especially if meat is being cooked. The other thing is the sounds in the kitchen, utensils scraping on pans, pans hitting down on the stove and counters I think hurt bunny ears and can make them freak out during and even after as they try to destress.

Normally what I do is when we are cooking something that I feel they may get freaked out about is I put a fan in the bunny area and position it so it’s blowing away from them – to help keep away certain smells from their area.

That’s an idea. We have a buny-fan already that we’ve had since our heat wave, i can turn that on when cooking and see how Monkey deals with it then

If there’s any way to close a door to muffle the sounds and cut down on the smells it might help to close it while you cook.
Sammy freaks from the fan over the stove when there’s smoke. But I can shut the door to “her” room and it’s not so bad until I am finished.
(But then, I never really cook, and the microwave buttons don’t bother her at all. LOL)

Rocky hates the microwave, and anytime we cook meat, too. Sometimes a fan helps, but most of the time he just stays out of the kitchen when we’re cooking… I figure he’s just going to have to get used to it… Hopefully the spaz-attacks will lessen over time! It helps when I talk to him though, I’ll say “Ok Rocky, I’m using the microwave now! Get ready!” I know it’s silly but I think it helps to give him that little bet of attention.

Can’t close the door, because its a really open floor plan, and her pen is in the area right near the kitchen. It was actually supposed to be the dining “room” but now its the bun room :p i’ll just give her her treat after i’m done cooking, so she can fell better :p

                    Oh the dreaded sizzle!!!
I am a trained chef – so, I kind of cook a lot. And I cook things like mead, bacon – and even vegetables!
When I first got my buns I had their pen in the kitchen – that did not last. I moved them into the living room – which is technical the dining room.
Like you, Monkey bun, there is no door between the living room & kitchen.
Well, they still don’t like all of the smells & sounds, but they tolerate them. It also helps to wash you hands well between cooking and playing with buns!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who experiences this with their rabbits! It’s funny that others noted that meat often causes the reaction, because after I went vegetarian my rabbits hardly have a problem with my cooking smells anymore.

Well there’s no way me and the hubby will go vegetarian, so Monkey will just have to deal with the smells We have started using fans to move the air through the apartment quickly so the scents dont linger in the air, so it bothers her less now

And Sage, Monkey lives int he area thats officially called the “Dining Area” on floorplans by the apratment manager, but is what we now know as the “Bunny Area”. No dining room for us! lol.

Most of my buns do not notice cooking (and that has *nothing* to do with the fact that cooking takes place in my home only on blue moons, with most meals being supplied by the microwave or pizza guy ) but Rupert HATES cooking. I can’t decide if it’s the meat or the sound but he definitely does better when we put the stove fan on so that cooking smells go outside. Glad the fan is working for Monkey too!

My buns HATE the smell of cookng, especially when making meat and things that have spicey smell. Whenever we cook we say “welp there they go!” they go run and hid till at least 15-30 minutes after the cooking has ended.

For one of my rabbits and one of my dogs it’s the fan that frightens them, not the cooking
