        Hi,

My bun was neutered last Tuesday and was back to his normal self pretty much straight away.

However, his poop has become progressively smaller over the past few days.

Is this normal? He is eating and drinking his usual amount.

The pellets he used to get have been swapped for larger ones. The breeder that we bought him from 6 weeks ago had been feeding him pellets for much younger rabbits and so his molar teeth were quite bad – the Vet noticed during the neuter, filed them down and suggested the new pellets.

Any help would be much appreciated.

        Thanks,

        Sarah x

It shouldn’t be. It sounds like he’s recovering from his dental and his neuter.

I noticed on your profile that your rabbit is only about 6 months old which is not normal for a rabbit of this age to have. Are you feeding him plenty of hay as well? Hay is what is going to keep his teeth “filed” properly – not pellets. It could be a case as well of malocclusion which is pretty common in lops and if that is the case, then it may be a life long problem for him (dental problem that is).

Yes the majority of his diet is hay and has been since I got him, with a handful of pellets a day and some spinach – going to introduce new veggies one at a time as I don’t want to upset his stomach.

I don’t think he was fed much hay at all while he was at the breeders and that is why his teeth were so bad. The Vet said that as long as I carry on as I have been doing his teeth should improve/not get any worse.

Is he shedding at all? He may have a bit of fur blockage if his poos are smaller. I’d watch for any poos that are stuck together, like with strands of fur, called ‘string of pearls”. The hay should help him pass any and get normal again, as will plenty of water. If he’s not shedding, it could be a reaction to the procedures, but watch it to see if they continue to be smaller and if he stops eating or grinds his teeth loudly, sits in a huddle like he is uncomfortable, get him to the vet. He may get into pain from a GI problem. Otherwise, the hay and gradual greens instead of a lot of pellets should get him regular again.

You can feed him a papaya tablet (sold in pet stores) or a bit of fresh papaya cut up. It moves the gut also.

Thanks RabbitPam. He doesn’t seem to be shedding so hopefully he will be back to normal again soon

Some of his droppings are normal sized but he is still producing smaller ones the majority of the time.

I have not fed him any pellets today – want him to eat as much hay as possible.

Some normal sized ones is good. That’s good that you are pushing the hay. Makes sure he’s drinking plenty as well.
